After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)
I don't understand how they can support this book for kids. Teach kids that there are bad things out there and how to deal with it yes but all this vivid description isn't appropriate IMO. I remember seeing some of this stuff somewhere about a cross awhile back and I had to turn my head and not much shocks me. Are you getting any feedback from the parents?
How was art biblically related?
Some feedback, all supporting my position. Not as much feedback as I would like, though.
This is part of what makes the book biblically related:
"This book is, among other things, an attempt to show the church how to understand what artists do, to explain the "cultural vocabulary," so that the church can not only join in solidarity with it's artists but also join them in engaging the curtural landscape that is in urgent need of Christ".
That chapter is also in the book but let's see, what will a bunch of teenagers focus on, the chapter I just quoted or the chapter discussing masturbation and flashlights?
I'll be back in a bit, Cindy. I promised one of my kids I'd take her shopping for new blue jeans.
No, I meant where do they back this up with scripture?
I cannot for the life of me believe this is happening. My husband warned me that this would all get twisted and turned around until I was the one who looked foolish. He was right.
You don't look foolish ... the school sounds absolutely deranged.
The only thing that I can figure is that the school is 'christian' in name only. They sound like they are based out of one of the most liberal of mainline churches ... something like the Episcopal church with the openly gay bishop.
CindyD is probably right. You might able to get them to drop the book, but if they really think that it's okay, ... who knows what you might be dealing with tomorrow.
You might want to think about finding another school for your daughter.
Morning, all,
They haven't backed this up with scripture, that I've noticed. They are very quick to quote scripture that tells me I should have gone to the person in question, the teacher who requires the book, but I was not aware that he was the one who chose the book. I went to admin because somebody up there had to approve the book. They are trying very hard to take the focus off the book and on to my actions.
My husband already told the head of the school that we won't be there next year.
I've noticed quite a few people in this school that like to trumpet how "Christian" they are but the actions don't match the words. We all sin but I believe that there is a special place in hell for all the people with "2 faces".
I know I make alot of mistakes and have issues in my life that I need to work on but I'm not going around trying to convince people how pious I am.
One other thing, a few years ago my kids orthodontist had his kids in this school. He had some concerns about something (I don't remember what, but it wasn't a big deal) and took the head of the school out to lunch to discuss it. The head of the school told him that he had a waiting list a mile long to get in this school and if he didn't like they way they were doing things, he could leave. He left.
Our public schools aren't teaching that kind of garbage.
Any chance of going over the school admins heads?
I'd be getting my child out now, asap, if for no other reason than to stress your point.
Is this school affiliated with any particular church or pastor/minister that you express your concerns to/with?
This issue is already as high as it can go, the guy who started the school is in on it. They aren't affiliated with any church.
My own husband is not even on my side on this issue. He hates the book and wants it out of the school but says I went about it the wrong way and I need to put out a public apology. Personally, I think the school should apologize for filling our children's heads with smut but my husband says that's no longer the issue. The issue is now the fact that I sent the email out to the parents. This is so screwed up I can't believe it. See what happens when you try to do the right thing? This is why no one wants to get involved.
As far as I can tell, you didn't do anything wrong. It's a free country and you have free speech and can contact whomever you wish to discuss what you consider a problem with their teaching material.
You went to the school prior to contacting parents.
That's what I keep saying but I'm being told I'm wrong and everybody hates me and even if we don't leave the school that they will probably kick us out. I'm not sure that's a bad thing I just wish my husband would support me. He's taking everybody's side but mine.
I suppoooooose you could make a public apology. Ummm like maybe an open letter to the editor of your local newspaper.
I'm not real sure what you are supposed to be apologizing for though.
I guess you could apologize for being a G-dfearing woman.
You could apologize for not being up to date with perverted porn needing to be taught in the school.
You could apologize for having trusted the school admins to hire respectable christian teachers that knew what G-d's teachings were and how that book would have been considered abominable.
You could apologize for not being willing to compromise your religious beliefs, as the school seems to have.
etc.
Who knows, a few more parents might read the letter and join you in trying to put a stop to it.
It sounds like you are going to need a lot of support to effect a change.
I would definately leave before I would let them kick me out. But, before I left, they'd know I'd been there!
Too bad you're husband isn't supportive. I was wondering if you could take them to court for a refund of fees/tuition based on false advertising. They claimed to be christian, but are teaching non christian material and deviant porn at that.
I'm not real sure what I'm supposed to be apologizing for, either. Not to the parents, anyway. Back on December 6th, my husband told an admin woman about the book and she said she would look into it. Weeks go by, my husband asks her what's going to happen, no definite answer. In the meantime, my daughter is still reading the book. I then sent the email to the parents but now the teacher and the admin woman feel that I'm attacking them and causing the other parents to attack them. It's no longer about the book, it's about 2 people who feel that I'm on the attack.
I have one important person on my side, a parent who is a county judge in this area. Her husband wrote an email to the teacher in question and said that he was on a lengthy business trip and hasn't seen the offending book but he trusts his wife's judgment that the materials are offensive and didn't want them taught to his children. Soooo, at least I have a judge on my side. Don't think they are gonna mess with her too much.
My husband is rarely supportive but since this concerns the well-being of our children I really thought he would be. Guess not. He's always put every one else's feelings ahead of mine, I don't know why I thought this would be different.
Don't back down. That's what they want. You aren't the guilty party here. Tell them that if they think they are being attacked now, how much worse it could be if you decided to write a ltter to th editor of the local paper.
Scare tham a little.
I'm kind of afraid to do anything else now. What else is going to blow up in my face? I never in a million years thought this would turn out this way, not in a million years.
You don't have to write the letter, just let them think that you might.
