The Neverending Story

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

Statistically, half the people out there are dumber than the median. Way more than half are dumber than the average.

One 200 IQ and four 75 IQs average out to 100.

That only works if there are fewer than four 75s (dull normal to borderline retarded) for every 200 IQ (no name I'm aware of, but well beyond "prometheus" and "mega") out there.

However... about 6-7% of the population falls below that 75 IQ line... while a 200 IQ is around one in a Billion (or less).

However again... it depends a bit on which scale you use. 100 is average by definition. but the high end of the scale really varies. The top 1/100 of a percent on one scale (the respected WAIS) is around 156, while the same level on the less-well-known Catell test is around 195. Most IQ test aren't even valid above around 155 anyway.

The intention though is to have a pretty perfect bell curve distribution. I think you'll find that the mean and average in this case are the same.

At least in theory... the study I'm most familiar with actually came in shifted a little to the low end.

Yeah, it's what he wants too. I'll be doing education and infection control at a rehabilitation hospital. At least we will have insurance now. I'm kind of scared about getting back in the rat race again though:')

Reggie, this is so funny. This cat will not let Eddie sleep. He wouldn't open his eyes and Coochie nipped him on the nose. Last night he got his toes. Eddie went to bed and within seconds the cat jumped up on his pillow.

Just to tie the two ideas together, voting for Hillary is like voting for your ex-wife. That's her public persona and it'll take a miracle to change it.

Don't underestimate Hillary and her minions. People didn't think that Clinton would be re-elected, but he was. A lot of people didn't think Hillaru would get elected but she was.

She could ride in on a 'anyone but Bush'. I think she could get more votes that Kerry. Most didn't care for him at all, yet they voted for him. With Hillary, there are actually people that like and support her.

I was just showing by hypothetical example how the "average" and "median" can differ widely. I wasn't trying to be rigorous in actually characterizing the American poulace.

I love cats but I think he wouldn't be allowed into my room.

I, accidentally, trained my cat to keep out of the bed while I was sleeping by rolling over on top of him. Come to think of it, the same trick worked with my ex. :-)

One of the corollaries to Murphy's Law is that progress is made on alternate Fridays.

Such is true as I made a good breakthrough today with the software bug I was chasing down. So now I can have a good weekend. Taking Sarah swimming tonight.

I knew there was going to be an ex joke before I even saw it:')

That may happen after I get tired of him being cute. I locked him in the bathroom once and he tried to come thru the wall. I also have to keep him away fron Cody. He doesn't wear the red bell any more. Cody liked it.

Over here ping. Morning yall. Meet Tuffydoodle. She's a friend from the horse thread who has a problem with a private Christian school. I invited her here to share her story.

Tuffy, it may be Monday before you hear from these guys. Some won't be back until dusk and some M-F's:') Welcome

Thank you for that nice welcome, Cindy. For starters, should I post the passages in the questionable book or do you think they are too offensive?

Yeah, I would post it. I doubt anyone will be offended. At one time I believe we even talked about this stuff. This is just a new thread from a long one. I have been here about two and half years and it was going strong long before that.

Ok, here we go. I found this book in my 15 year old daughter's room with her other school books. It is a book the class is reading in history and it caught my attention because of the name Mapplethorpe on the cover. I couldn't imagine what she would be reading about him so I picked the book up to take a look. These are some of the more interesting passages:

Subject: State of the Arts From Bezalel to Mapplethorpe

Author Gene Edward Veith, jr.

Chapter 1 page19
AIDS-martyr Robert Mapplethorpe's exhibition causes a furor. His photographs of homosexual erotica include sadism, masochism, pedophilia, and scatology. One photograph, for example, depicts a man urinating into the mouth of another man.

A new art form has emerged that is supplanting painting and sculpture for many artists--performance art. In one such work, the artist comes in and verbally abuses the people who have come to his show. As the tension builds, the artist, demonstrating how creative people suffer for the sake of their audiences, lacerates himself with fishhooks and razor blades.

Chapter 5 page 94
Performance artists have discovered ways to use sex to simultaneously titillate and outrage the public, drawing big crowds while infuriating the bourgeoisie. Annie Sprinkle describes herself as a "post-porn Modernist." Her performance art consists of masturbating, and then inviting the patrons to come up and inspect her genitalia with a flashlight. Karen Finley expresses a more feminist theme. She takes off her dress, pours gelatin into her bra, slathers her body with chocolate, and sticks bean sprouts over her body (calling them sperm).

I've been trying to get the school to take action since December but they've ignored the problem. I then emailed the passages to all of the school parents that I had in my address book. The school is furious with me for doing this, the parents that I've talked to are grateful and have requested that the book be removed. So far, the teacher thinks he's justified in having the book as part of the curriculum and he's trying to paint me as the bad guy for emailing the parents.

I think that your concerns are justified, TD.

I am, especially, surprised (though, not really) that this involves a Christian school. There is no question that this material is unsuitable for high school age children.

It appears to me that the school has a renegade teacher. Unfortunately, it also appears that the school is choosing to support the teacher (for whatever reasons), ... rather than addressing the concerns of the parents.

Continued parental pressure might get them to change their minds. As far as your actions (in this matter) are concerned, ... you were simply informaing parents as to what their children are being exposed to. If the school's position is that the material in question poses no problem ... they should have no qualms about all of the affected parents knowing what's being taught. The more parents that you can rally to agre with your cause ... the better.

I'll be praying that God will work this situation out for you and yoru daughter.

God bless ...

Someone brought up something interesting, I thought on another thread (I think Becky) that most teachers in Christian schools are not trained in Christian colleges and some may have been taught that this is appropriate. What really concerns me is that with enough pressure you can get the book out but you can't change the mindset of people that think nothing is wrong with this.

I just got a letter from the school that was sent out to all the parents that I talked to, describing how they are right to have this book in school, as in addition to the pornographic paragraphs that I quoted, they also describe art in biblical principle. They are trying very hard to get the spotlight off of themselves and make me look like the bad guy and I sure hope the parents see through it.

I cannot for the life of me believe this is happening. My husband warned me that this would all get twisted and turned around until I was the one who looked foolish. He was right.
