The Neverending Story

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

OK. Thanks.

I'm curious about your end times beliefs. As you understand it, Jesus comes back, and then what?

Pretty much as Mack has said ... the simplest answer is ... that Jesus will return to the Earth ... and will establish God's kingdom among mankind on the Earth.

An added detail in my interpretation is that I believe that scripture shows that the kingdom of God among men will be centered here on Earth with the new Jerusalem as its center.

One fairly popular (and reasonable, I think) sequence of events leading to the end ... (most of this is derived from Daniel's prophesy) ... has the Temple being rebuilt some seven years before Jesus returns.

The rebuilding of the Temple will become possible due to a seeming comprehensive peace which is established in the Middle East between Israel and her enemies.

It is furthered speculated that this peace will only last for some 3 1/2 years, after which one of Israel's sworn protectors will turn against her (Israel) and lead an invading force to destroy her.

Going on ... Israel will be miraculously saved from her enemies and this will usher in the beginning of Christ's reign on Earth from Jerusalem.

It appears that, after some 1000 years, Satan will lead a rebellion against Christ's reign and those who join in this rebellion are removed from the kingdom (as it were).

Ultimately, God's kingdom will be peopled by those who wish to be a part of it ... those who would rather not are not forced to do so.
Daniel 9:21 yea, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, approached close to me about the time of the evening offering.

9:22 And he made me to understand, and talked with me, and said: 'O Daniel, I am now come forth to make thee skilful of understanding.

9:23 At the beginning of thy supplications a word went forth, and I am come to declare it; for thou art greatly beloved; therefore look into the word, and understand the vision.

9:24 Seventy weeks are decreed upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sin, and to forgive iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal vision and prophet, and to anoint the most holy place.

9:25 Know therefore and discern, that from the going forth of the word to restore and to build Jerusalem unto one anointed, a prince, shall be seven weeks; and for threescore and two weeks, it shall be built again, with broad place and moat, but in troublous times.

9:26 And after the threescore and two weeks shall an anointed one be cut off, and be no more; and the people of a prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; but his end shall be with a flood; and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

9:27 And he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week; and for half of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease; and upon the wing of detestable things shall be that which causeth appallment; and that until the extermination wholly determined be poured out upon that which causeth appallment.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Daniel 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince who standeth for the children of thy people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time; and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to reproaches and everlasting abhorrence.

12:3 And they that are wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn the many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.'

12:5 Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on the bank of the river on this side, and the other on the bank of the river on that side.

12:6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river: 'How long shall it be to the end of the wonders?'

12:7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he lifted up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and swore by Him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and a half; and when they have made an end of breaking in pieces the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

12:8 And I heard, but I understood not; then said I: 'O my Lord, what shall be the latter end of these things?'

12:9 And he said: 'Go thy way, Daniel; for the words are shut up and sealed till the time of the end.

12:10 Many shall purify themselves, and make themselves white, and be refined; but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand; but they that are wise shall understand.

12:11 And from the time that the continual burnt-offering shall be taken away, and the detestable thing that causes appallment set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

12:12 Happy is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.

12:13 But go thou thy way till the end be; and thou shalt rest, and shalt stand up to thy lot, at the end of the days.'

Here's the best crop of the seal images I could do (Reg, the first and the third came through, but the second one did not). Because it was a .bmp file, it gets grainy very quickly when you try to zoom in.

Thanks guys. A few more questions on the same subject, if I may.

At what point, in your understanding of the chronology, does the rapture take place? What about the resurrection of the dead and the general judgment? Also, in what manner do you think Jesus's return prior to the 1,000 year reign will be?

Hope you're keeping warm, dry and safe, Reggie. Due to the amount of drifting, it's hard to tell how much snow we got. They say our area received 7-9 inches. Which pales in comparison to what Reggie is seeing:

Severe Weather Alert from the National Weather Service

VINEYARD HAVEN... WALTHAM... WARWICK... WEYMOUTH... WOONSOCKET AND WORCESTER 846 AM EST SUN JAN 23 2005 ... BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST THIS EVENING...

AN EXTREME SITUATION IS OCCURRING IN EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS. FOUR INCHES OF SNOW WAS REPORTED IN 25 MINUTES AT CHELMSFORD MASSACHUSETTS SHORTLY AFTER 7 AM AS THE LAST EXCESSIVE BAND OF POWDERY SNOW SWINGS SOUTHEASTWARD.

THE NORTH SHORE IS BEING BLITZED BY SNOWFALL RATES OF ALMOST 4 INCHES PER HOUR. IT MAY LAST ONLY ANOTHER HOUR OR TWO BUT ITS A COMPLETE SHORT TERM PARALYSER.

IT IS SPREADING EAST SOUTHEAST AT 15 MPH INTO BOSTON NOW AND WILL CONTINUE THERE THROUGH AT LEAST 11 AM. THIS BIG SNOW BAND WILL ARRIVE ON THE SOUTH SHORE BETWEEN 10 AM AND 11 AM AND THEN CROSS THE UPPER CAPE BETWEEN 11 AM AND 2 PM. IT TENDS TO LAST ABOUT 2 HOURS. THAT MEANS 8 INCHES OF SNOW MAY FALL IN PORTIONS OF THE BOSTON AREA IN A 2 HOUR PERIOD DURING MID AND LATE MORNING.

FINAL BLIZZARD TOTALS FOR MOST OF EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS WILL RANGE BETWEEN 28 AND 38 INCHES SETTING A NEW SINGLE STORM RECORD FOR BOSTON... SURPASSING THE AMOUNT FROM THE GREAT BLIZZARD OF 78 AND THE PRESIDENTS DAY STORM OF 2003.

ISOLATED TOTALS OF 40 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE. VULNERABLE LOCATIONS FOR NEARLY 40 INCH STORM TOTALS ARE ESSEX... MIDDLESEX... PLYMOUTH... NORFOLK AND BARNSTABLE COUNTIES IN MASSACHUSETTS.

EVEN IF THIS STORM COMES UP SLIGHTLY SHORT OF RECORD... IT IS A DANGEROUS STORM WITH THE WORST OCCURRING NOW INTO EARLY THIS AFTERNOON AS WINDS STRENGTHEN AND TEMPERATURES FALL TO NEAR 10 ABOVE.

NANTUCKET MAY END UP WITH ONLY 12 TO 22 INCHES... BUT BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL DESCEND ON THAT ISLAND LATER THIS MORNING OR THIS AFTERNOON.

NORTHERLY WINDS WILL BE GUSTING AROUND 75 MPH ON BARNSTABLE AND NANTUCKET COUNTIES. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS LIFE THREATENING STORM BECAUSE OF SEVERE BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF THE NEWLY FALLEN SNOW AND TUMBLING TEMPERATURES.

SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES HAVE OCCURRED THIS MORNING AS WINDS ALL ALONG THE COAST GUST BETWEEN 55 AND 65 MPH ON BOSTONS NORTH AND SOUTH SHORES AND EVEN ON NARRAGANSETT BAY. A 78 MPH WIND GUST WAS REPORTED IN EAST FALMOUTH BY A SPOTTER.

THERE HAS BEEN ISOLATED DAMAGE REPORTED TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE.

POWER OUTAGES MAY BECOME WIDESPREAD THIS AFTERNOON ON THE CAPE AND NANTUCKET WHEN THE BRUNT OF WIND HITS THERE... BETWEEN 75 AND 80 MPH.

DRIFTS OF AT LEAST 6 FEET ARE OCCURRING.

OVER CAPE COD... NANTUCKET AND MARTHAS VINEYARD... THE SNOW HAS BEEN OF A WETTER CONSISTENCY EARLY TODAY AND THERE HAS BEEN SOME RAIN ON NANTUCKET. THIS RAISES THE ANTE FOR POWER OUTAGES IN EXTREME SOUTHEAST NEW ENGLAND WITH THE SNOW CLINGING TO WIRES AND BRANCHES.

ALL THE HEAVY SNOW WILL TAPER TO SNOW SHOWERS LATER THIS AFTERNOON OR EVENING... BUT CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING WILL PERSIST INTO LATE THIS EVENING ACROSS EXPOSED AREAS.

THERE IS A CHANCE OF BLIZZARD CONDITIONS CONTINUING ON PARTS OF CAPE COD INTO EARLY TONIGHT AS HEAVY SNOW SQUALLS POUND PARTS OF THE CAPE. A BLIZZARD WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OR FREQUENT GUSTS OF OVER 35 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH CONSIDERABLE FALLING AND/OR BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. WHITEOUT CONDITIONS OCCUR AT TIMES. THOSE VENTURING OUTDOORS MAY BECOME LOST OR DISORIENTED... SO PERSONS IN THE WARNING AREA ARE ADVISED TO STAY INDOORS.

The "purpose" he accomplishes is bringing the earth back under the rule of God, then?

Back to the Law/Torah? That is one of the things I would use to determine the True Messiah. If he discards the Torah then he's likely false. If he encourages people back to YHWH and the Torah, then he may very well be THE Messiah. There would be other things, but imo, how he treats Torah/Law will be a biggy.

Thanks for the picture. I don't have the best camera so it's not possible for me to zoom in enough. Those "lumps" on and near the rocks are seals. :-)

Hope you're keeping warm, dry and safe, Reggie. Due to the amount of drifting, it's hard to tell how much snow we got. They say our area received 7-9 inches. Which pales in comparison to what Reggie is seeing:

We are having a doozy of a storm. We got a double dose because of our proximity to the ocean. First the storm came from the West, went out to sea and turned back to become a dreaded "Nor'Easter".

It seems to have nearly stopped and the wind is not as bad as it was so I am contemplating going out to use the snowblower. Maybe? Maybe I'll wait till tomorrow.

At least we haven't lost electricity so I am comfortable inside. I hired some kid to shovel my deck, steps, and a path to the garage.

Some people on the South Shore got it much worse than we did so I can't really complain.

It would have been fun if the Patriots & Steelers had to play in Foxboro. It is like last year's "snow-bowl" with Miami.

I'd be in a heap of trouble. My snowblower is electric start and I can't pull start it. (I have no balance so I fall over when I pull the cord).

I couldn't open the garage door and the side door is buried under a pile of snow.

I have a generator but it is in a shed about 75' from my back door.

I can't open the back door because there is about 3' of snow banked up against it.

The only other way is a long-long walk through 2-3' of snow and there is no way I could do that.

My only recourse might be 911 on my cell phone. I wonder if they'd take me to a sports bar? :-)

LOL! Since they're probably Patriots fans too, I'm sure the local police would be sympathetic to such a request. ;o)

Keeping in mind that the rapture is, ultimately, simply a transition point for the church, ... and, really doesn't affect the rest of the rollout of God's plan ... I find that there's the most scriptural support for a rapture before the other major events of the last days.

The resurrection and the general judgement appear (from Daniel) to appear in the interval between the tribulation period and the millenium (1,000 year reign).

The return of Christ prior to the millenium would be seen as His triumphal return, as His coming will bring an end to the tribulation period and every person still alive on earth will witness His return.

His return would immediately preced the resurrection and the general judgement, after which He sets up His thousand-year rule from Jerusalem.
