"Dell : an Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor (2.80GHz, 533 FSB)
Apple : 1.25GHz
"
you're kidding right? i like how you didnt mention the apple processor. Which is a G4. the dell processor my be faster in ghz but if you remember amdhal's law clock speed does not make a faster processor. If you don't know what i am talking about, just take my word for it . Comparing a G4 and P4 processor on clock speed is like comparing apples and oranges.
I've been using mice since the mid 80s, obviously not on Windows back then, despite what some here say about Windows' history. But IMNSHO, Microsoft was the first company ever to build a comfortable, sturdy, quality mouse.
kinda like KIA and ferrari right?
Most people who buy computers (99.99%) DON'T know squat about the inner workings and couldn't put together their kid's bike, much less a computer.
Almost all people do not build their own.
"That crazy Bill Gates, first he steals Steve Jobs idea and then he doesn't want to make a compatible product."
You mean he stole Xerox's idea from Jobs.
Users of OS X have grown steadily since its introduction, and continue to rise. I bet this little thing will double the number of users in less than a year if Apple can keep the supply lines full (with which they historically have a problem).
I have a D800 right here with a Pentium M and 1GB of RAM. It's a bit clunky, but in general it's a damn good system. I never knock the quality of Dell's high-end.
My two main complaints are with the video. The pixel size on the monitor is far too small, causing eye strain on native resolution. I won't lower the resolution because the fuzziness of a non-native resolution bugs me even more. The second complaint is with the bugginess of the dual-monitor drivers -- and I can't just download the latest from nVidia, have to get from Dell.
Aw, go drown yourself with your boat anchor.
At $499 this mac is price competitive with a dell PC, may be a bit better or may be a bit worse depending on your needs but it defiantly is competitive..
You guys quit fighting about this - to each his own and it doesn't really matter anyway as long as you each are happy on your own platforms.
More important question is: Better caliber? 9mm or .45?
(I'm .45 and Mac - btw).
You gotta be kidding me, right? Look, if it's on your Windows box it was a Mac at least two years before.
Speaking of which, when are you boat anchor operators gonna finally get rid of those 'floppy' drives. :~)
The Mac uses the exact same USB connectors as any PC. Just pick the multi-button USB mouse of your choice, and the keyboard of your choice, and plug them in. You will probably need a driver for the extra buttons of the mouse (read on).
You're better off selecting your _own_ 3rd-party mouse and keyboard, anyway. Since the company moved to USB (replacing the old Apple mouse/keyboard connection architecture that was called "ADB"), they have yet to offer either a keyboard _or_ a mouse that is [in my opinion] usable.
For a keyboard, I would highly recommend something by MacAlly called the "iceKey". It has a traditional "feel", is full-sized, and has a couple of rows of programmable buttons above the normal keys, which you can set up however you like. These sell for about $28 or so. Try "macally.com".
As to the mouse, I found the relatively basic Microsoft "blue" mouse to work just fine on my PowerMac g4 1.25ghz dual-processor desktop. To drive it, I use something called "USB Overdrive", a shareware utility that is customizable to _any_ mouse you plug in - really good software. I believe you can find it at "usboverdrive.com".
If you're seriously considering a Mac Mini, I'd suggest spending the extra $100 for the faster CPU and larger hard drive. At this point, it's unknown whether the internal CPU will be upgradeable in the future.

Bang! Your credibility is shot. I don't even think Bill Gates himself would believe that!
The iceKey slim keyboard is definitely the best.
Officially it's first half of 2005 which I interpret as being June 30th at midnight.
I've heard that their Java 1.5 release will run on panther but their holding it out for Tiger. It's pretty late as it is. Pretty sad for a computer that Jobs said he'd make the premier Java development platform.
So a Mac will accept a 9 pin serial mouse? Or a mouse or keyboard that has a PS2 plug on it?
The only reason I was considering it is because I've been looking for a way to get my 70 year old mother to use email and Internet access. A WinPC is out of the question. An Apple would be good because of the stability and ease of use...but the price always was the stumbling block. If this new mini-Mac is stable and easy to use for a woman who is a techno-dunce, then it might be worth a shot. I have plenty of peripherals on hand to use to complete the package.
Have you ever actually tried an Apple computer?
It's very different from a Dell in look, feel and design. It has more of a Mercedes or BMW feel than the Chevy of Windows.
That's why people love them, and why they are still a successful company despite being more expensive than the Dull Computers of the world.
To me, Dell is one of the major reasons we have Dull Computers - an industry that's been leeched out of its creativity by a company that creates mindless copies of what's already there, instead of innovating. Companies like Dell are parasites which feed off the innovations and creativity of others.
True, they are well screwed together and work, until the latest virii and spyware attack. But they have no heart, and they've squeezed the heart and the joy out of many formerly innovative companies.
And that's why I'd never in a million years buy a Dell computer. The fact that their imitative business model is so successful is an attack at the core of my personal worldview, which wants creativity, innovation and uniqueness to thrive.
Apple is the innovator. It's not perfect but at least it thinks creating cool, magical things is something that can still be done with joy, something that commodity PC fans like you may never understand.
Your loss.
