PING
ping!
Further, he was much loved by CS Lewis, the great Christian apologist and writer, as a friend and fellow member of the Inklings literary society. The character of Ransom in the CS Lewis Space Trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength) was modeled in part on JRRT. CS Lewis had a tremendous amount of respect for JRRT.
That Hideous Strength
One of my favorites.
Yes, THS has a lot of great moments... the part where Studdock is forced to touch a particular dot in the not-quite-square room ; the Merlin character ; and the general "inner circle" description... very much on the mark.
Consider yourself pinged

Bumpitttt.
He not only opened up the door to a new realm of literature, but to a whole new genre, GAMES; fantasy board games, and later, video and computer games.
We're reading C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy aloud to our kids right now. I had wondered if Ransom was modeled on Tolkien!
I know what you mean. I've read them many many times and still find new things.
Those are great books. I rather thought Ransom echoed Lewis himself, never thought of Tolkien.
The third book took a couple reads to grow on me; the second is gripping and wonderful; the first is fun.
Yep. Who are the Tolkiens and Lewises of our day? Or won't we nkow until they're dead?
Dan
Later Tolkien was appointed as Reader in the English Language at the University of Leeds.
Do you have any idea what this means? It sounds rather silly, but I bet it's prestigious.
There is still lots more to learn about Tolkien himself. I didn't know, until I watched the supplementary material in ROTK-EE about "the horse lords" that Tolkien was an accomplished horseman, himself.
One of his first jobs in the army was to break horses for other officers. Once he got to know the horse, and had him trained right, the horse was taken away, and he was given another green horse.
That was also the first job my grandfather, a farmboy, had in the Austrian army in the same war. It broke his heart to know what would happen to most horses, even the elegant ones belonging to officers. So he transferred to the artillery, where he wouldn't have to see the killing that artillery does downrange. My father and I followed in his footsteps in our own Army, minus the initial cavalry part.
Just as Treebeard was modeled on CS Lewis - a great bear of a man with a deep rumbling basso voice that coulod be heard up and down the halls of Oxford...
He's Eleventy-One today! :-)
Well... eleventy-three, actually. ;~)
LOL! He'll beat the Old Took yet! :-)
