The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I use Jeffers all the time. I like their shipping policy. If you order $60, shipping is free, except for FOB items. FOB shipping is outrageous anywhere you look. You're better off buying heavy or bulky stuff like that from a local store. If I don't have $60 worth, (which is hardly ever) I'll check with some of my other horsey friends and see if they need anything. Since I live in Alabama and they are too, I can order one day and have it the next as long as I order before 2pm Central time. But no matter where you live, they'll get your order out the same day you place it, unless you order vaccines or other perishable late in the week and they think it may get stuck over the weekend, then they'll hold off until Monday.

Your brunch place in Tulsa sounds nice. I like trying new places. The piano player sounds like a really nice touch.

You know, we've gotten where eating out is just not that great anymore. Especially when you go to those mid range priced resturants. We've tried so many, the places where a hamburger is like eight bucks. I'd just as soon go to a fast food, OR pay the higher prices. Places like Chilies, TGIF, Applebees, they just all taste plastic, but aren't that good.

This place is not a chain, been around for a long time and I'd heard it was very good. So one Sunday after church we tired it. We went there on our Anniversary last year too. We didn't think their regular menu was as good as the brunch on Sun. for the money we spent. But the brunch was good the time we tried it. I hope we didn't just catch them on a good day:). We tried to go there on Mother's day last year too, but you had to have reservations. The place was packed. We have reservations today.

Horse Owner's Veterinary Handbook is a good one. It's hardcover, not sure if you can get it in soft. It's one of my favorites.

Yesterday I ate at a little place called Cafe on the Common. You couldn't beat the prices. Very few plates were over 6 dollars, and you got a heap of really good food. The decor was pleasent and you got really good service too. For two people, with soup main course and drinks, the tab didn't even come out to 20 dollars. I can't wait to go again.

Local resturants, I have found, are usually better then the chains.

The chains are kind of nice tho, when you go on vacation somewhere.

I agree. For example, I LOVE TGI Friday's Jack Daniel's Chicken. And there's a chain buffet place around here that I would give my right arm for. (I love to eat)

Oh I'm not much of a football fan either. Wouldn't even being paying attention if the Pats weren't in it. I just think that it's cool that we won the world series (Finally) ;-) And now we're in the super bowl.

My husband and I used to love to watch Mike Tyson, when he was just starting out. Too bad he screwed his life up so bad, he was something else.

My husband likes to eat at truck stops when traveling. You can eat, get gas and pee all in one stop. We have eaten at some really skanky places before but lately many of them or cooking up pretty good food and nice and clean and offering a lot of amenities to travelers.. It's usually either that or he lets me out on one side of Mc Donalds and picks me up on the other:')

We spend alot of time wondering where to eat too. We both work at the same place so we go out to lunch somewhere most days. I'm like you in that I don't really care for chain places either. The food costs too much for what you get. We like this little hole-in-the-wall place down by the Gin, next to the John Deere place called The Farmhouse Grille. It kills me that they put the 'e' on the end of Grill. Trying to be fancy I guess. ;o) But they've got the BEST country cookin' I've ever had (outside of my Mama's kitchen). You can get a meat and 3 veggies, bread and all the tea you can drink for $4.95 and you can not hold another bite when you leave there. They're real friendly folks too and it doesn't matter if you've got cow crap on your boots or not. My kinda place!

I love early morning when my family is still asleep, so quiet and peaceful.

It's really gloomy here today, supposed to start raining this afternoon sometime.

Speaking of bad service, I recently tried to change my prescriptions from Kroger to CVS. What a total and utter disaster that place is! They got my scripts all wrong, the place was packed with other people trying to get their scripts that the pharmacist got wrong, and they were amazingly rude. I made them send all my scripts back to Kroger and complained to everyone who would listen. A CVS manager called and was very apologetic and nice and I was nice back but I did tell him I'll never set foot in another CVS store. He said he hoped I'd change my mind and they would try to do better, that the store I went to had a bad reputation and they were getting rid of everyone there and starting over, basically. The CVS is much, much closer to me than the Kroger that I've been using (it was close to me before we moved out here) but I'd drive to California before I'll go to another CVS.

Truck stops are usually pretty good eatin', I think. I love greasy food.

We took the kids to a McDonald's recently that was cleaner and nicer than most upscale restaurants. I was shocked. It was all dark wood paneling and horse paintings, lights kind of down low. Unbelievable.
