The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Ok, here's the pictures of our creeks.

This is the little one below our house that I cross alot riding. You can see from a previous flood that part of the bridge got washed away. That bridge has been under water 3-4 times since we've been here. The bridge got washed away about 3-4 years ago. Every year we have been told it's going to get fixed.

It's kind of hard to tell from this picture, and it's the best of the one's I took, how much water this is, but this creek bed is 30-40 foot deep.

This is in town, usually what Bixby looks like after a rain:

And, since I had the camera and was taking pictures, I took 2 of MY dream place. This place has 80 acres. Indoor/outdoor arena, hay barn, stables, pecan grove, and great great pasture and hay field. The lady that owns it rasies Arabs/1/2 Arabs. I bought my first Arab from her. The house is not big, it's pretty old, but well kept, just a frame house, and it's all set up really really well. She doesn't board horses, or sell them usually or anything, they're pretty much just her hobby, but she does it alot.

This is a view of the place thru the peacon grove:

Wow... lots of water in those swollen rivers!

You're right about that gorgeous place. I would love to go cantering through that pecan grove myself!

How could anyone live in a place like that mobile park that floods like that over a heavy rain?

They're actually 2 creeks, that run into the Ark. River:).

I pass that place everytime I go to town. We are acquainted with the lady that owns it, she's very much a loner type. Very, very private person. I see her riding out there alot, and have wondered if she ever wonders why the hell that woman is always staring at my place:). Especially if she saw me taking pictures. Since she was born and raised there she probably doesn't realize that anyone would covet her place:). It's truely the picture perfect horse ranch. She was divorced for some years, and recently reconciled with her husband, and they now have a small herd of cows also. And they have been replacing alot of the fence around it. Her mother use to live there, but died about 10 years ago and she inherited it. Lots of money, which of course they would have to have to keep the place as perfect as they do, and not have jobs.

I've wondered the same thing. Especially when it fills like that in the summer. Mosquitoes!!!! The whole town of Bixby has problems with flood control. OUr city...cough, cough...fathers:) have been working on it, but you know when your in an area of low sea level, that water is going to be there. The flood control ditches they keep diggin in neighborshoods, just keep filling up with dirt.

Eddie and I visited my BIL's neighbor that breeds and sells horses. They have a very nice set up too with a small older frame house off to the side. I guess when animals your living you don't spend much time in doors but I think it's amusing that farmers and ranchers usually have bigger barns than houses.

They're strange people. I've never figured out if she is snooty, or just an extreme introvert. If you run into her somewhere, she usually doesn't speak. Who knows if she is happy.

I kind of forced our meeting. Like I said you see her out riding all the time. Back when I had my first horse and was having problems and wanted to get some help, I figured the place to go was someone who rode alot. So I called her. She said she didn't fix problem horses, but her husband did, (they were still married at the time). Make a long story short, they said the horse I had had never really been broke, she came out of a dude string, and I needed something more broke. We sold her and bought an Arab from them. I got to ride with her for a week before I brought him home. I still remember/use alot of the tips she gave me. She's very good with a horse. I've often wished she was more approachable. I actually think she is more rigid with her horses then I am:). She's the one that taught me to be careful about treating them as if they were a pet like a dog would be. She made so much sense to me that it stuck.

I don't think that it's mean to use spurs if they're used judiciously and in the right way. If I see someone really kick a horse hard with spurs I think that it's cruel and unusual punishment. I think that if a horse doesn't need them they shouldn't be used, but if he needs a reminder to move off you're leg, it's fine. And just because you wear spurs doesn't mean that you have to use them when you're using your leg. :-)

We are preparing Bute.... Just heard a big commotion in the barn. Bay had gotten in his stall (unlatched gate), I think with Cyn, and somebody was kicking something. Bay is favoring a hind leg, giving him the bute, haven't checked Cyn close yet but she's on all four feet.

What is more humane in this senario?
In the case of you having to kick the crap out of your horse to try to get him to move, versus having to use the spurs once, spurs are the more humane way to go. And sometimes with some horses, all you have to do is wear or carry a crop for a horse to move. You don't even have to use it.

I hope it's not serious. At least it happened now then in the middle of spring when you want to ride. That's usually the way it works around here.

Just curious. How do you define "pet"? I find myself somewhere between the two of you and to me, a pet is just an animal that you own and take care of. Cindy very special to me but I expect her to mind. I have had animals that I have found other homes for because I just didn't really "click" (for lack of a better word) with them. They were still pets though, IMO.

Exactly.

I'm thinking I might just be to overly sensitive about people thinking I'm a "mean" person, or there is something wrong with my horses:). LOL.I need to get over it, and stop reading things into comments from people coming to look at Harley that probably aren't there.
