Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I've heard of people putting "Lok Tite" or super glue on the threads right before screwing them in, but this was on eye glasses. I'm sure it would work for Chicago Screws too.
I wouldn't think that a piece of electrical tape would bother the horse but it'd look kinda tacky. You might just wanna make it part of your tacking up routine to tighten those things instead.
As she wasnt being cooperative, and we dont have a head stall, he did not do an internal. He did feel her all round while dodging kicks and thought she was doing ok.
Was he trying to palpate her when she was making a fuss? That's not ~all that uncommon~ for a mare to protest that unless it's happened so much it's just part of the routine. I know she's had foals before, but if they've been pretty hands-off, she may view it as a very rude invasion.
So what about the Edema.... Edema just means a fluid accumulation doesn't it? cause?
He was pressing on the swelling which left an indentation after pushing in, he thought she was so crabby because she was pregnant and due very soon.
He kept saying how "large" she was.
Apart from the swlling he thought she was in very good shape and didnt feel the need to do anything at the moment , because of her being close. He said that he thought the swelling would go away after she had foaled. He knows he is on standby!
Bay got kicked once, we think.... and ended up with a big soft Edema on his side, it looked like a melon under the skin.... vet came out and looked at it and said the bubble of fluid would probably gravitate under his belly, which it did, and be slowly reabsorbed, which took a long time. It probably looked a lot like your tire, which is why I asked yesterday if it felt soft, like it was just full of fluid. Any discussion or memory about whether she might have suffered some kind of blow to the gut? Or is there some internal cause of edemas that doesn't have to do with a blunt trauma?
The vet said she was just retaining fluid because she is not getting much exercise due to her bulk. The edema is the length of her belly and about 3 inches thick, thats why it looks like a tire! It is also symetrical.
Sugar is not herself at all today, very edgy and testy.
I am glad that the vet has been but I wont stop worrying till the foal has been born. I just went on a site that said that a low lying edema in late pregnancy may be the result of an extra large foal or a foal in the wrong position. So to say the least I am still concerned.
All of the horses are wormed regulary. So I dont think it can be that.
Are her ankles swelling too? Pregnant women's circulation suffers too, I've seen, late in pregnancy, and fluids will just drain to the lowest spot.
Well I'm just glad he didn't think it was that problem ya'll were talking about last night! Man, that looked like a bad deal.
If it's just swelling, well who hasn't seen an incredibly pregnant woman who's feet and hands looked like sticks of bologna with little coctail weenies attached, with the rest of her body looking like it was made out of various sized mellons. It'll all go down when she gets that huge baby out of there.
No, she doesnt have any other swelling at all. Just under her belly. The vet said she was in good shape. Vital signs good. He didnt appear to concerned at all and said the swellin should go down after she has foaled. He also said she was mushy by her tail, but although bagged up some, she still had some to go.
I hate to say this, but I don't think the vet did enough either. Either senairo is not good.
I can understand, I guess, him not wanting to palpaite her if she was kicking, but I really think he should have, or at least advised you to either bring her in so she could be put in stocks, or hobbled her or something. I would think a vet would know what to do to get the job done.
IMO, you really don't know anymore then you knew before he came.

Tell me about it, he was so quiet and frowned whilst checking her, my heart nearly stopped. I was so scared he was going to say something awful. I will be just glad when she foals. She is a size!
The swelling, IMO, is not what concerns me, it's what he said the causes of the swelling are that bother me.
IMO:), a vet would want to make sure which it was. If the foal is to large, CAN she birth it, if it's in the wrong postion shouldn't it be straightened out?

I'm with you on this one, He seemed scared of her, which didnt invite confidence from me. He is a very good vet with my dogs, but I wish the older vet had come out! : ) If she looks in distress, no matter what time fo day or night, i hope to get the older vet out.
I asked him if he could feel the position of the foal and he said that would be impossible. I wanted him to check that the foal was the right way round and not breech or comething. He just kept saying she was big.
I have never seen her go to kick someone the way she did him.
Are these two vets you're speaking of partners? If so, 1) I wouldn't pay this bill, at least till the older vet came and did a better exam, 2) request the older vet.
