The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

As a "beginer" myself there is no way I would want 3 unbroken horses. We knew Lightning was green when we got him, but also knew he was about to be homeless. So pretty soon after we got him we hired our trainer to work with him and he has done wonders.
He is pleased with Adge, and the way he responds to us. Adge quite often will come to me and my daughter and we get to give him some love. I always love on his Mom and I think he has taken cue from there!
We are starting some more work with Adge next week, Tim is coming to help us.

I don't think beginners should take on breaking one. But this poor woman got snuckered. She bought a mare with a foal on her side, both unbroke, from the stable she was taking lessons from. They should have known better. They told her they would help, but I've heard they abandoned her now tho. Of course she could very well be one of those people who is going to do her own thing, and the trainers just gave up dealing with her.

I was a beginner myself once. I remember that. I have since learned that MOST of the things beginners thinks is the way to do things with horses is generally wrong. I learned to look around, find the people with the horses that behaved in the manner I wanted mine to behave then do what they said, even if it was something I didn't think was right. After applying those things, it started making sense, and also worked:)

It's good that you have a trainer, and that you are willing to listen to what he tells you.

NO problem. I understand. It is hard to do anything while waiting for something important to happen.

I feel sorry for the woman, it seems like she has taken on a handful.
I take ALL my cues from my trainer and little tips you lot give out on here! : ) He is the experienced one, not me.
I dont want to get hurt, and the best way is to listen and learn.
We are going to go lead reign with bareback pad sometime.....it will teach me more about balance and the horses movements and responses to my movements. Then I am going to be taught all about tack etc.
Well I am going to take Tommy to nursery school and get back here in time for the vet.
I'll be here shortly.
: D

This pattern was what I was thinking was called a Sabino, but I may be wrong.

Since I've never met the lady, at this point I am giving her the benefit of the doubt and feel sorry for her too. I'd like to find out which stable she bought them from. It's hard to imagine a reputable trainer selling her those horses.

I've been asked to help, and will if we can get our schedules together.

I've never heard of "sabino", but the description Duchess gave made me think of the horses whose markings have what almost looks like a dotted line outlining the spots..??? I've seen that before. It's not a real visible distinction, but it does happen.

Yesterday we put my very oiled bridle together. There are screws that hold the snaffle bit to the leather. Just one tiny one on each side. I asked my trainer if they could ever come undone and she told me that it has happened occasionally. I asked her what to do if it happened and she told me just to hang on to whatever I could and get off as fast as I could. I was thinking about just putting a piece of tape over it for security. Yall think that would bother the horse with rubbing? Is there a back up "lock" that anyone uses?

Ya'll were talking about the horse in Hidalgo and never having seen a mustang with that color. Well apparently there are plenty. Check out this site I found while searching on Google for Sabino pattern descriptions:

http://www.mustangs4us.com/Horse%20Colors/sabino.htm

Page down about 5 times and look at the horse on the right hand side. He looks just like Hidalgo. Same color and everything although kinda scrawney.

I don't like those screws... I think they do come loose all the time. But some of the western riders might have advice, they're common on western tack.

Well normally I might not worry but they got a lot of oil. I'm thinking about taking it to a leather shop for stitching but once I do....That's why I wondered if yall knew of any safety clamps out there first.

You can paint the screw with fingernail polish or locktite, screw it in while the stuff is wet and let it dry. That's usually enough to keep them from backing out.

I'm gonna let Duchess answer that POA question, but I don't think so. I think the registries are completely separate... I don't think you can register an Appy POA just because she's too small. They do register solid horses, but they are called 'breeding stock' like solid paints are.

Sugars swelling is edema. He thinks she is very close and very very large. He listened to her heart and breathing, but she was not being at all cooperative or ladylike and tried to kick the &^%$ out of him. It is very unlike her as she is a gentle plodder.
