The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

back ones are stetched out, and considering her size, i am surprised she can get up and down.

I'm glad the vet is coming - it almost sounds like the baby moved into position and has now moved out again.

well, he wasnt sure he needed to come out. My farrier trainer has never seen it before and thought it might be a good idea. He felt for the foal but we got tied up and he didnt say too much, he did think however that it would be any time.

Can't get your picture to open - this is so frustrating 'cause I can't see the mare.

I got about 18" with a few drifts up to 3'. The houses directly across the street got no less than 3' with some drifts up to 7'. Yes 7'! They had to bring a frontloader because trucks couldn't handle it.

We were lucky though - power never even flickered.

Your description is tough to picture, and I was grasping at straws and taking a wild guess as to what, if anything unusual, might be happening. I can't see the mare, and neither can your vet... if you think her tummy looks like that, I'd encourage the vet to come out soon, rather than waiting.

There are steps to take if this is what's happening, and I would get him out today. Read through the answers on that link.... she may need assistance now and during delivery.

I'm the first in this group to call a vet, so no one will be surprised at my advice.

I have just called the vet again, and mentioned the photo and ventral rupture and he said he would definatly be here in the morning, She only looks like the white horse, not the others. It may be that the foal has dropped into a strange position, but I am surprised she hasnt foaled and want him here whatever. Better to be safe than sorry.
My farrier/trainer just felt her all over, not internally as he didnt have any gloves. He felt the "tire" shape too. I have tried to call him but he no answer.

Just now got into the link and saw the pictures. Good lord - I have never seen that, for that I'm thankful. Rose, are you saying your mare looks like the grey mare in Hair's picture or the grey mare in my picture?

"he no answer" ???? too much land before time movies for me~ LOL
I was hoping he would come sooner, but he didnt seem to think he needed too. I hope that if she does foal, she is ok. She has been laying down a lot and is "off" her hay completly.

OK - Your vet is an informed person on the urgency of the situation, and I'd trust his judgment that tomorrow is soon enough.

There were common sense advice tips on things to do for her, to let her be quiet, keep her movement to a minimum, and it wouldn't surprise me that she wants to lay down.

Like Hair says, the vet is the expert. Now that he's coming, just keep an eye on her and say a couple of prayers.

Well, mares and foals can come through that, she just may need help because if she's lost the muscling in her abdomen, she can't give the contractions she needs to deliver alone and will need the vet there.

It may not be this... I want to stop short of running with this idea like it's been decided.

She is already in the small field, her underneath, is not quite the same as the picture, but the "tire" shape has me concerned. She has foaled before.
She is walking slowly around the field now. I am keeping as close an eye on her as i can with two elderly parents in law to nurse and a 2 year old! This is so frustrating as I lack the experience to know more.

So - while you're waiting, do you have a foaling kit ready? Everything may be completely normal and that will be good. There may be a problem but if you're ready for it; it won't be as bad.

I've had mares go almost a year (360) days and mares foal as early as 324 days. I've lost one foal and sweated through thinking I had twins coming, which thankfully I did not.

If there is a definate line under her belly that is up higher than the sides then I don't think there's a problem there yet.

Lots of things can cause a delay if she was ready and then stopped, and some can be fixed by her, herself, some with a vet's assistance.

I'll be hoping everything is OK. I've never personally be around any mares that had problems foaling, so I can't give any advise. I'm so glad the vet is coming.

What time do will he be there, so that we know how long to set our anticipation clocks? :)

I'm back from riding Rusty, and taking five:). I wanted to ride him first to see how he was today. Remember last time I rode him, before new shoes, I thought he was stumbly and especially off on his left rear. Must have been the old shoes, because he was fine today.

But Lordy, we are all so out of shape:)
