The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

My region only appears to have one ride last year in the state, which happens to be about 6 miles from my house... much of the activity is in CA.

So if we did it, it might not be something we could get really into all season, just one ride a year, unless that changes or there are other rides not listed here:

Well, one of the best things about CTR is that you get your score cards. You know what you did wrong, what you did right. The judges are good about commenting on what they liked/disliked.

Now there can be things that are just differences of opinions. One time we had a judge who was a dressage rider. She took off points on some if she saw alot of slack in the reinds. Then another time there was a western pleasure judge....see where this is going:)

Sometimes you may get marked off for something, or a comment about something on things like that. When it happens to me I just don't take it personally. But, really getting those score cards has been the biggest help to me on my horsemanship.

My goal now, is to hit just 2 this year, one in the spring, one in the fall. The two that are closest to me. I've kind of lost the zeal for the 4 and 6 hour hauls.

Now if Harley should really do well and place good, I may change my mind.

One of the main reasons I want to go is I've made alot of friends, people I only see at the rides. That's part of the fun. After the rides are over for the day, everyone sits around camp rehashing the days rides, obstacles, who screwed up, who thinks they did good. It's almost all horse chatter all weekend. I really enjoy it.

Sure would be good to get the score cards. Dressage is that way, they comment on each maneuver and what was good or bad about it. Much better than other kinds of horse shows.

I wouldn't be surprised if some judges have a pet peeve that others don't. At least in this event, you get to know what it was that made the difference in scores.

That's one reason to hang on to those cards too. If you go to enough rides, you'll probably be judged by a judge you've been judged by before. If you have your cards, you can look at it and get ideas on what this judge likes.

Another trick of the trade:)

Think I'll go get Rusty saddled. The sun is NOT shining, but it's not cold.

See ya in a bit.

Hi,
I lived in Jacksonville, just outside of Anniston from '77 to '81. Beautiful country although sort of like living in a greenhouse :)

Oh, so you were right in the middle of Tallagega National Forest. I hear there are some good trails down there but I've never been. Did you go riding there?
