One objection we here at Passion for Fairness often hear about our petition drive is that The Passion of The Christ is too important a movie to diminish itself to the level of Hollywood award shows. Its a valid argument, but one we (obviously) disagree with. For starters, we believe it is incumbent upon conservatives and Christians to engage the culture, not create an alternative one.
Moreover, its not as if Mel Gibson has eschewed earthly pleasures. In fact, hes the biggest moneymaker in Hollywood!
"Mel Gibson is among the highest paid people in Hollywood this year, and probably will be for the next few years," Forbes magazine staff writer PETER KAFKA tells ET. "He's rivaling Oprah, rivaling Steven Spielberg. Among most producers and most directors this year, he'll probably be the best paid."
Mel's haul this year was a whopping $200-million-plus just from the phenomenal success of 'The Passion of the Christ.' In addition to domestic and foreign box office, he can count merchandising, video and DVD sales -- and he can expect the money to continue pouring in.
And you know what? As long as he does good things with his fame, glory and riches, theres nothing wrong with it.
And while its true Mel isnt campaigning for an Oscar, he has submitted his film for consideration. So he clearly hasnt taken himself out of the running.
So cmon! What are you waiting for? Sign the petition!
I think he might win for cinematography, or for Jim Cazaviel as actor, but probably not overall.
Why should he desire to be recognized by Hollywood? The Oscar represents their narrow worldview, and is only an earthly recognition. I don't think Gibson is even thinking about it. I admit that I could be wrong here, but I just get the impression that these types of profane, worldly honors don't rank very high on Gibson's list of priorities.
The nominees for oscars were already announced. I don't think that "The Passion" is in any of the major catagories-Best Pic, Actor, Director, etc.
Probably not a priority, per se ... but one needs to have entered themselves for Best Picture and Best Director, and Mel Gibson did so.
Moreover, he's distributing "screeners" ... free DVD's of the film to Academy voters.
I think it's fair to say he hasn't eschewed the idea. He's just not "campaigning" for it.
No they weren't.
They get announced on January 25th. I think you're thinking of The Golden Globes.

I would love to see Mel Gibson and The Passion of Christ win Oscars but it doesn't matter if they aren't even nominated because Mel has already won.
My bad - those nominees were for the Golden Globes!
The Passion is beyond anything to do with Hollywood or their self-serving awards, glitz, and sleaze. I hope this movie receives NO mention at all, which will be very telling to the country about Hollywood Liberals and their value system.
Thats just why you need to say Yes, to the Oscars.show Hollywood , this was the Greatest story(moive) ever told and Gibson put on film majestic !!!!!!!!!
