Anyone who has the gall to claim the Beatles sucked knows effin' zip about music.
"Julia"
"Day in the Life"
"Norwegian Wood"
"Here Comes the Sun"
"Penny Lane"
"For No One"
Simple beautiful music, lyrically complex and many new recording techniques invented and used for the first time. If you can't enjoy their music it's only because you can't understand where Rock was and where they took it. To give you a hint, "Sugar Shack" was a hit on the charts shortly before The Beatles arrived.
The Beatles wer great. No comparison to the trash put out today. They were revolutionary in many ways....using orchestra music, mixing, on and on. Only a person with little knowledge of the evolution of music would not recognize their contributions. As far as songs..Yesterday, My Life, side 2 of Abbey Road, ER, etc. Pick up the CD that documents how these songs were put together. No one did these things before them.
The Beatles were timeless. 100 years from now their music will still be listened to and discussed/studied, as will the whole "Beatlemania" era.
Sure, someone else would have come along eventually, but at the time they changed music completely. Music was stagnating, with artists like Pat Boone being at the top of the charts. The Beatles gave popular music a swift kick in the pants and started the ball rolling.
I can understand how some people (as is evidenced in this thread) don't like them, but to ignore their influence on popular music and culture is folly.
Personally, I love their music and always will.
Taxman, Back in the USSR, I am the Walrus, Hey Bulldog, Hard Day's Night, Let it Be - all great songs.
"then quit on a high note with the peerless Abbey Road."
No, they had the forgettable "Let it Be" album.
The "against" guy is all wet. Measured aganst the absolute wasteland of the '60's music the Beatles were a shining star: fresh, innovative, extremely listenable. Give 'em a 85 because you could dance to it.[You old fogies know what that means...]
There were others coming like the Grateful Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service and Jefferson Airplane...but they weren't there yet. The Beatles were there first.
You poor guys and gals who were born in too late...you missed something special thats hasn't happened since.
The white album is my favorite. It's amazingly diverse.
The first album I ever bought was "The Beatles First Album", the year it came out. I played it over and over on my turntable and memorized all the lyrics to all the songs. I thought "I Wanna Be Your Man" was kind of dirty. And I followed the position of all the Beatles' songs on the Hit Parade. I rejoiced when one of their songs knocked Elvis out of first place.
Rock and Roll PING! email Weegee to get on/off this list (or grab it yourself to PING the rest)
I discovered the Beatles a good 10 years after they split, but to this day, their music stands as classic. They deserve all the accolades they got and more.
I laughed my A$$ off at all my silly friends who were buying up every Beatle record they could find to spin them backwards for the "Paul is dead" clues. It was even more entertaining than when Iron Butterfly showed up for a concert at Penn State (1969)with NO INSTRUMENTS because they'd been confiscated that day in Canada. The organist got up to the mike and asked if anyone would be willing to loan them guitars, amps, drums, etc.
Although a few of Paul's solo efforts were less than average, there were a couple standouts -- Band on the Run and Wings Over America. The latter was recorded during the 1976 tour. .....an amazing show (I saw the L.A. Forum gig).
THREE GOOD SONGS? AHEM.
Yesterday. Getting Better. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Get Back. While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Two of Us. Here Comes the Sun. Let it Be. Maxwell's Silver Hammer. When I'm Sixty-Four. Blackbird. Revolution (not #9). Across the Universe. Long and Winding Road. Eleanor Rigby. Penny Lane. Magical Mystery Tour. Strawberry Fields Forever.
Get the point? That's a lot more than three.
In my opinion only......
To say that the Beatles suck is like saying that the BeeGees suck. In order to say that, one must only listen to their top 40 hits.
If one would like to appreciate either band, one must listen to all of their music.
I know the top 40 stuff of the Beatles. Those songs are part of the soundtrack of my life. Because of an older sister who won a "Hard Days Night" album from WIXY 1260 in Cleveland, the songs are familiar and comforting. I am not a big fan, but they did change our culture. I can't say for the better.
The BeeGees are the same. Because of the "Saturday Night Fever" era, people think their music is garbage. However, listening to the "Nights on Broadway" era of their music is my favorite.
But all in all, it's opinion, nothing more. If someone is stating an opinion, I feel that they should hear the entire library.
Sorry couldn't resist... :0)
His one-liners (the extent of the words in his works) would be great in 20-second soundbytes.
