Rat Brains Fly F-22 Raptors

Florida scientists have grown a brain in a petri dish and taught it to fly a fighter plane.

Scientists at the university of Florida taught the 'brain', which was grown from 25,000 neural cells extracted from a rat embryo, to pilot an F-22 jet simulator. It was taught to control the flight path, even in mock hurricane-strength winds.

Give all the credit to Freeper "zencat" for bringing this to my attention.I once thought my two grandmothers lived through tremendous change from 1900-1990s. If this is what lies just over the horizon I they saw only the leading edge.

Rat Brains would make a cool screen name, though.

When you see how few neurons it takes to do fairly sophisticated things, you wonder what all of ours are doing. I'll bet we could make a Democrat with fewer neurons than a housefly, and it could still be taught to hate Bush.

Not to toot my own horn, but...

I thought of doing this with birds many years ago. They have a good sense of direction, they are more expendable, and they can already fly, so wouldn't this be better than rats? I can add this to the list of ideas people have stolen from me over the years ("Who Wants to be a Super-Millionaire?", Animal Face-Off, the Pizza Hut "4 For All" pizza, etc.) I'm going to start looking for electronic bugs in my house, so have a good night, everyone!
