The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Are there any Tolkien significant dates in April?

I haven't bought mine yet either.

I really want to coordinate with other folks so that we're all flying in at more or less the same time.

We should put up a thread on ecurbh's forums to get those finer details in order.

As far as the doorbell goes, I'll let someone else ring it. ;-)

There are, but I haven't got my index here. Ecurbh probably has some online resources or has his books handy...

Since I'm sitting here with the books at hand...

From "The Tale of Years":

T.A. 3018 (S.R. 1418)
April 12: Gandalf reaches Hobbiton (in "The Shadow of the Past");

T.A. 3019 (S.R. 1419)
April 6: Meeting of Celeborn and Thranduil.
April 8: The Ring-bearers are honoured on the Field of Cormallen.

T.A. 3020 (S.R. 1420, the "Great Year of Plenty")
April 6: The mallorn flowers in the Party Field.

True, March was the busy month.

There's only one entry for December, though: December 25, 3018, The Company of the Ring leaves Rivendell at dusk.

Yeah, those peaceful weeks really are rather uneventful... though I'm sure Frodo appreciated them.

Months... the Council of Elrond was October 25 of the same year. The next entry given is the December one.

What I meant though, was that entry was the only December entry that I could find in the entire Tale of Years. If you thought April was a slow month....

Yeah, I remember wondering why they waited around so long. If they'd left in October surely the weather would have been a little better.

The earlier years don't have many actual dates, right? So some of the other stuff probably happened in December, we just don't know it.

I remember wondering why they waited around so long.

Elrond sent out scouts and messengers ahead of the Fellowship, and it took two months for them to go out and come back with their reports.

The earlier years don't have many actual dates, right?

That's true, only The Great Years have actual dates. Earlier and later years just give the year, no dates.

No doubt the Elves were too busy with all their Christmas deliveries to help them get ready to leave on time...

Yeah, that was Tolkien's excuse. I think he just wanted to make the trip as unpleasant as possible.

Corin, I'm ignoring that post.

We should put up a thread on ecurbh's forums to get those finer details in order.

we need a chart to track who is coming to ShootMoot so I can have enuff holes dug, er, I mean, accomodations ready...

also, a list of firearms coming so I can have the range prepped and lots of ammo laid back...
