The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Morning Sam - no I don't; got a friend whose dad makes them. I have made a couple just to do it. There isn't much to it once you get the hang of it. My first one was really awful.

Flemish is easier than Endless IMO and nothing is needed besides the B-50. Fastflight isn't recommended for our wood bows. If you get some B-50, get two colors that contrast well, it makes it easier to keep track of what you're doing.

What's B-50?

I figure making my own strings would be a good thing...right now I have to go out and buy a string, then match the bow to it...maybe it would be easier to match the string to the bow, especially if one end was looped and the other left unlooped, to be tied with a bowyer's knot.

Now that I'm reading these (fascinating) books, I'm glad I didn't have them when I made those 4 bows, I think I would have had too much to think about!

B-50 is a waxed Dacron, most of us consider it the standard bow string. There is also Fast Flight and D-75 which shouldn't be used with our wood bows. The latest catalog I have shows B-50 at $7.50 per 1/4 lb. spool. It has about 1,200 feet on it. So for 15 bucks and shipping you can make a lot of strings.

Serving material is sold by the 100 yd spool for a few bucks.

Now if you want to get really authentic you can twist up your own using deer leg sinew, squirrel skin rawhide, or by using the long fibers of several plants like yucca, nettle, or hemp.

Yes there is a lot to read and digest in the TAB's. They are about the best out there. Primitive Archer magazine is a great read as well. They have been around for about 12 or so years. I've got every issue.

Morning SQ - I'll bet he has a supply laid in already. He sent me some of the primary and secondary wing feathers from the turkeys he has shot. I'll process them into fletching and some will likely head back his way on arrows for his young 'uns.

Glad to hear that Suzi.

I remember how long 6 weeks felt when Luke was in the NICU.

Thanks.

Well, there is some sisal growing around here, I'm sure it would be fine for string making. But I imagine I'll settle for the B-50. My daughter grew her hair real long last year, way down her back, but that has been donated to cancer victims, probably could have worked.

I've got a couple envelopes of turkey feathers lying around, leftover from the atlatl dart making. After seeing how the arrows look on the covers, I'm going to have to try making some, I guess - those things just have a look that beckons.

I wish you would watch King Arthur and tell me what you think of the bows and archery in there - too bad it's such a lousy film. I notice there was a tradgang discussion on it, though, with favorable comments on especially the archery scenes, but also the film. But those guys may not be as much on the alert for political correctness as we are over here.

Cool...

I have to do laundry today. But I'm happy because the water-weight pounds are starting to come off, so apparently the diet is working. Which I knew since I'm not screaming for chocolate every ten minutes.
