The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I can do the basics, including some basic wiring. But I don't ~do~ plumbing.

On the whole, though... plumbing is far lower risk than wiring... at least from my point of view.

I mean... a leaky pipe may be annoying for now... but 220 volts is forever. :-)

Nah...I know where the breaker is.

And I forgot (repressed memory?). I tried to change out the bathroom faucets once too.

Once.

That, I will never do.

Along with: putting little tags on things to remember when I did that.

You know you've officially crossed over when you start putting tags on the bottom of things for people to have when you die...

Yah... most binos eye relief cups for use with glasses, but what I'm saying about these is that they've got way better relief because of the oversize glass on the eyepieces. It's hard to describe without just seeing it to see how it works.

No, no, no... if only it were that simple. What we're talking about here is putting a little tag on the gas can for the lawn mower, with the date when you bought the gas, so that you know that you're not putting "old" gas into the lawn mower.

Where does the "old" gas go? Well... of course it goes into the gas tank of the twenty-year old Chevy pickup that's just gasping for breath but will choke any kind of crappy gas through it...

Don't even get me started on the generator...

We just started putting the little tags with the date on the new DeWalt batteries, so we know which ones are the old ones :~D

Sure you did; you fixed that clog! Now it may not have been what you had PLANNED to do tonight, but sometimes we just gotta roll with it baby!

Wow! Your Dad runs a GLP lawn service? Does he put storage conditions and the expiration date on the tag too? :)

Do you remember the thing with Nita's stuff? In Grandpa's estate? It was remarkable...

Everything... and I mean everything... whether it was a spoon, or or hand mixer, or a potato peeler... everything had a little tag taped on it someplace with the date it was purchased and how much it cost. EVERYTHING.

It was staggering, really. I can only think that it had something to do with growing up throught the great depression. The trauma of that time left an indelible mark on how people of that generation viewed money, and it really stuck.

We should perhaps think that it wasn't *entirely* a bad thing.

What was interesting to me is that it made the whole house a sortof museum of dollar value and inflation. It was actually interesting that a spatula purshased in 1968 cost .59 cents at the Piggly Wiggly in Phoenix ;~D
