The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I could never abide greens. I used to hink it was because of the way my Mama cooked them. But I've tried them as an adult, and the only one I can stand is spinach. I like it raw, and cooked in 'Florentine' dishes. The rest of them are just way too bitter for me.

I'm gonna do a turkey and some cornbread dressing for New Year's Day. I'll also cook up a batch of Black Eyed Peas to represent the 'coins jingling in your pocket'. I'll have a green salad with some dark greens in it to equal the 'folding money' part of the charm.

I'm going to try a lower carb Key Lime Cheesecake using the Splenda baking blend. It's half sugar/half Splenda, so it's not totally low carb, but I won't feel so guilty eating it! ;o)

Why won't they sell you twenty?

I'm a member of their discount club (added 10% off, except for closeouts like this). I was flagged for buying 10, and got the email when I tried to buy 20 more.

They will sell me more, but then I get kicked out of their club. I buy a lot of stuff from them, so staying in the club has its advantages. Especially since these knives don't carry the 10% discount.

Any of you can sign on there, buy a couple, and "get away with it". While supplies last.

I'm emailing the guy at BladeMatrix (who came up with our CRKT stash), and inform him of the closeout status of these knives. He may be able to locate a supply, or even buy us a bunch at Sportsman's Guide.

I etimate we will send one Camillus "Black Ops" for every five CRKT 57xx.

On a more-pleasant Sportsman's Guide note, I got that long-gun computer safe today. VEY impressive, it's basically a 10-pound cast-aluminum "purse", made by the same people who make those computerized handgun safes that you bolt to the wall, bed, etc. I have one of those safes, which is where that nickel S&W snubbie is kept. It's the only "hot" weapon I have in the house.

For this long-gun safe, the mounting bracket detaches from the inside. So you can bolt it to a wall stud, then remove the gun, and take the safe off. This lets you travel with the safe around the action of the weapon. I could see using the cable mounts to secure the safe to one of the cargo tiedowns in the back of my Jimmy. The safe has the California seal of approval, which means it satisfies even the gun-grabbers.

The only downside I see is that the interior is molded hard plastic, and seems intended only for a "smooth-sided" pump or semiauto shotgun or rifle. No bolt actions, no separate pistol grips. I may have to reconfigure my Mossberg to fit. The shotgun has a sling with 25 rounds of assorted shotshells in the loops. It should be able to hang outside of the safe.

Pictures some day of the setup, if I ever get up enough ambition to install it.

Question to the writing types - I'm guessing Bear and Rose may know this one best. I'm also guessing this is going to sound stupidly obvious even to me after I've had a little coffee...

Normally, would one send out a manuscript, wait for the rejection, and THEN send it to another publisher? Or send it out to a bunch in hopes of getting accepted by one, and then on the VEY off chance it's accepted by another, let them know it's already taken?

Just curious.

Also, how the heck do you get multiple copies of a manuscript, anyway? I'm thinking I need to invest in a laser printer someday...my poor printer can't handle that kinda stuff.

Osage, we rented and watched the Disney movie, "King Arthur" a couple days ago. I have to say that we thought it was very lousy, on several levels, the primary one being that it is truly boring, not to mention poorly acted.

I was interested in the various bows used, though...seems like a few flat bows made an appearance, that seems wrong to me.

Fun watching it anyway.

What one *actually* does, as far as I can tell, is send out a query letter. Slush pile (sending in a whole manuscript unsolicited) is not the way to go.

And if it were, you still would only send it to one place at a time. Slow, but honorable.
