That Grass Will Grow Back
Why is the Foul Pole Fair ^ | 2003 | Vince Staten

Posted on 12/18/2004 3:24:26 AM PST by beyond the sea

There was always a game going on in my neighborhood....... We didn't have a real ball field; we cobbled one together from a couple of backyards, a vacant lot, a garden, and a dog pen.

My back yard was the infield in spring; I remember a man my father used to work with coming by and being greatly distressed at how we neighborhood boys had worn base paths into the grass. "Those boys are killing your yard," the man said. And I remember my father's answer: "Those boys will be gone someday, that grass will grow back."

Thank you for the reply. I thought Free Republic could use this thought during this meaningful season. I just wish I could have posted it on News/Activism, so more folks could see it and get the message.

If you know some FReepers who would enjoy this feeling, please ping them.

I wish everyone here on this great site to enjoy (while they can) the things that God gave them.

Cute! We don't have room for baseball in our yard, but we have a big hole under the swingset :-).

We plan to put in some all-weather surfacing in the spring. Otherwise the EPA will declare us a wetland and make us move!

UNDER the swings too? You'll get "turf toe" like the guys in football. They'll have to be you on "the unable to play" list. You'll be out for weeks.......

;-)

From a guy who is 57 and played some professional baseball and every other sport and game and grew up in the 50's, I am weird enough to have an aversion to synthetic playing surfaces. I'll never forget the first time I saw "astroturf".

I hear that Bill Clinton was one of the first customers of the astroturf salesman down in Arkansas ("When I was a younger man and had a life," quoth the leader of the free world, "I owned an El Camino pickup in the '70s. It was a real sort of Southern deal. I had Astroturf in the back. You don't want to know why, but I did.").

Anyhow, good luck with it.

I understand your feelings ... but with an artificial surface, and good drainage, the kids won't have to wait 4 days after each rain to use the swingset!

"Those boys will be gone someday, that grass will grow back."

They will probably never name a school or a hospital after the man who said this and he'll probably never achieve world-wide fame or great fortune but he has figured out something of profound importance that cannot be taught. I admire him.

A broom and a cubic yard of nice dense river sand nearby would do the trick for years........... oh, I know, I'm being a pain!
