Configuring a Visioneer 8600 scanner
self

Am I the only who finds Visioneer scanners hard to configure? I had to reinstall the software recently. Before, I was able to select "scan" and have the image go to Microsoft Paint as its destination. Now, though, when I configure the Scan button, I don't see Paint as a selectable option for a destination. The closest option is to create a PDF file, but that doesn't help, because I eventually want to insert files into PowerPoint.
How can I tell "One Touch" (the Visioneer software) that I want images to go to Paint?

What's a Visioneer? I suspect 99% of the readers have no clue.

Seriously. You might find someone who has a similar model to help, but a question this specific is really the sort of thing that is best directed to the manufacturer for support.

I used to have to support Visionerr scanners, and they are a PIA in the cooperation department. I'm just happy I don't have the responsibility anymore.

Most of the replies you have received are fairly accurate.
The quality and reliability of a scanner is not the mfg but the software and drivers and visioneers is pitiful.
However, to help you out now before you get a new scanner USB (do not even think about parallel) assuming Win XP go to ADD/Remove and remove visioneer one touch driver - leave the Scansoft software. Then open Win Explorer and find C:\WINDOWS\twain_32 and delete every file and folder under C:\WINDOWS\twain_32 with the exception of the wiatwain.ds if present. Chances are good you are using the version 2.0 driver.
Go to Visioneer website and download and install ver. 3.0 driver.
You problem probably stems from the fact that you are using some type of registry editing software such as System Mechanic, Advanced System Optimizer, or PC OnPoint. These programs will see Visioneer's Reg entries as invalid because of standards violations (poorly written).
Bottom line Rudy - All of your responders are right. By the time you figure out the cost of your time and frustration, you will have already paid for a new $60 to $80 good HP, Canon or Epson scanner.
Keep in mind, when you resolve you issue this time, document everything you did because it will not be the last time you will be visiting this problem.
Good Luck!

Ha, thanks... you're right... the Visioneer software was TERRIBLE. I couldnt, for the life of me, figure out how to associate/link various applications to the scanner. I would have thought it would have let me point to the applications via a "browse" function, but NOOOOOOO....So, I junked it and went with HP.
Thanks anyway.
