Lennon, the new musical about John Lennon's life set to open next August, will have two unpublished songs that Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow, has given to Don Scardino, writer and director of the production.
The songs, India, India and I Don't Want to Lose You, exist only on private recordings that Lennon made in his last years.
I Don't Want to Lose You, a slow, introspective ballad, was one of three songs Ono gave to the surviving Beatles when they reunited in the early 1990s to complete a few Lennon songs for The Beatles Anthology. An electronic hum in the song had made it unusable. India, India is a sweetly melodic reminiscence of their 1968 visit to India.
"They're very appropriate for the periods they are showing," Ono said Monday. "People would say to me, what are you going to do about all of John's unreleased songs? And I've always said, I will put them out, but I have to find ways to present them in the right way. For these songs, I thought the musical would be a very effective, beautiful way to do it."
Lennon was shot to death on Dec. 8, 1980, 24 years ago today.
Rock and Roll PING! email Weegee to get on/off this list (or grab it yourself to PING the rest)
Yoko seems to have class. And I love the Beatles, warts and all.
No offense intended, but you obviously haven't been paying much attention the last thirty years.
By the way, thanks for all the pings, Weegee!
And apparently he's never heard her sing.
She's carried herself head and shoulders above the entertainment crowd, never seizing the notoriety of her husband's murder to promote herself or some idiotic cause celebre, that I know of. She has remained devoted the memory of John Lennon.
All the Beatles, regardless of their politics, have been nearly models of deference, humility and good manners, by any standards, especially today's.
Yes, I agree. Paul was incredible after 9/11. George was always graceful and witty. Ringo plays music and remains his good-natured self.
I wish other famous rock players would take their cue and lay off of the heavy-handed self-righteous pronouncements to their presumed moral inferiors. I guess that's one reason the Beatles were always so likable, they never took themselves too seriously.
EEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAWAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEEEWAAAAAAAAAAAAH
lol
I encourage you to do a Freerepublic search for "Yoko." Make sure to search older articles also. Your opinion may change after doing so.
Good soft-sell. I'll tell ya, if she's promoting something, she's doing a pretty poor job of it! If what you imply is correct, she retains big points for not acting like the cheap whore most of the entertainment industry currently does. Opinion unchanged.
I've gotten into discussions here where the Beatles were totally villified... then a guy named Eminem came along, and the Beatles seemed like the Mormon Tabenacle Choir.
The Beatles were the masters of their game, and like someone else posted, never took themselves too seriously.
Can't make me hate 'em or their women.
Yoko is a money grubbing weirdo who I hold responsible for the break-up of the Beatles. Listen to the crimes committed on her Plastic Ono Band album with John. Utter tripe. It hard to believe that just a few years earlier, John was doing Strawberry Fields.
It took a little longer than I expected, but it came alas.
All things must pass!
the beatles are and always will be my favorite group.
i am still crushed that john and george are gone.
alas all things MUST PASS, and i can't IMAGINE where thier music would be today if they had the opportunity to keep creating in this world.
I would never blame Yoko for breaking up the Beatles, because the simple fact is that John desperately wanted out by the time she came on the scene. She did, however, get him addicted to heroin and is a talentless poseur who made him look like an ass in front of the world on many occasions. Watch the Live Peace in Toronto video some time for a good example.
Furthermore, when you judge her class, you should consider that she is wealthy beyond words due to John's talent, not hers, but refuses to share any of it with John's son, Julian, who has struggled for years.
It matters not to me what your views of her are. You should be aware, however, that if you were in a room with one hundred people who have been paying attention, you would likely be the only one supporting her.
I've been immune to peer pressure for years.
I'll keep looking for signs that Yoko is your typical talentless artsy widow, as I would have expected her to be. I have not found the evidence, but have heard your testimony. Instead, I've been amazed at her low profile.
I have a hard time pitying Julian. He's the firstborn son (so far as we know) of a very gifted man. Got way more going for him, in just that, than most of. Pity about his talent vacuum.
Can this be the end of it, mate?
