I saw that interview 20 years ago. Even then he said, "I can't believe I still pull it off." The humility by itself is inspiring.
I didn't see this interview but I can't fault him for wishing his fans weren't misunderstanding him, or that they wouldn't just about worship him. He's a regular person, too, and this is the way he makes a living. The customers can get to you, sometimes.

Ed Bradley still has his earring. Does he wear his "I refuse to grow up" T-shirt? Are his arms all tatooed?

I have no idea what goes on underneath that impeccibly tailored suit.
But I do know that the only old men who look good in earrings live under the skull and crossbones and say things like "Walk the plank!" with a cutlass in their teeth.

The customer aggrivation factor seems to be directly indexed to his book deal and it would seem he wants the customers interest when there is something to sell and then loathes it when the receipts fall below the overheads of smiling and using good manners.
Barry White was one of the best entertainers I've ever heard interviewed. Good man gone.

you sound a little bitter your darn self. There's something hilarious about Barry White and Bob Dylan winding up in the same sentence...
I recall reading an interview with Mr. White once, in a used bookstore in Santa Barbara (my requisite "California" experience). I don't know what kind of entertainer he was, but he was definitely a self-promoter. But that's OK, I sort of am too. But I don't breathe suggestive lyrics into a microphone for a living....

"So post it a little closer now babeyyyy........" -Barry White's last comment on Free Republic.
If you don't like his lyrics, there's alway's his Love Unlimited Orchestra. I've got it on CD. I listen to it all the time as well as my new found old artist Bill Withers. His "Keep on Using Me" is a 70's treasure.

keep on usin' me -- apart from the message -- is a hot r&b tune -- quite a shocker from the guy who gave us the wet-bag ballad, "lean on me."
Stevie Wonder might fly in this orbit, though of course in a universe of his own (here I am baby!) And how about Smokey Robinson?

Oh yes -- "Love's Theme", right? That's a creditable composition, worthy of Q, I'd say. Sort of a forerunner to the Average White Band.

As far as the nose ring - the one Dan got in the 60's should still work just fine... LOL! Good one.

We've even had digital editing of Rice's picture putting Biance's white girl hair on her head Do you know that Beyoncé Knowles is of mixed race? She's as much a white girl as she is a black girl.

No I didn't know that. I guess it's as much of a secret as Halley Berry's jugglies being half white too. After all the tears she sheds on surviving the struggle as a black woman, I find it interesting that her mom is lilly white.
The point wasn't really Knowles, but it was the odd phenomenon that only deblacked people are valued by the traditional entertainment and news media. If you are "too black", there is something wrong with that. I find that shocking.
I found no woman hotter than Grace Jones. Instead, black beauty is supposed to be Vanessa Williams, Halley Berry, and Tina Turner, who much like Ed Bradley become increasingly whiter and whiter.

Those fans he is ridiculing would appear to be the leftists who made him a "voice for a generation" and overplayed/sang his songs at protest rallies in the 60s AND 70s.
It pigeonholed him.
Actors who play Superman have a hard time getting other roles.
