The University of Notre Dame announced Tuesday that Tyrone Willingham will not be retained as its head football coach, according to the school's Web site.
Willingham's teams were 21-15 overall in his three seasons as Irish head coach.
A 4 p.m. news conference is expected.
With Willingham out -- and after the recent firing of New Mexico State's Tony Samuel and resignation of Fitz Hill from San Jose State -- there are now only two black head coaches in Division I-A: Karl Dorrell at UCLA and Sylvester Croom at Mississippi State.
Notre Dame (6-5) has accepted an invitation to play in the Insight Bowl in Phoenix against a Pac-10 team on Dec. 28.

In other news, Butch Davis of the Cleveland Browns is out, also.

Hopefully he comes back to Stanford! They just fired their coach this weekend.

People are speculating Urban Meyer from Utah (he has a buyout clause for Notre Dame), but I'm sure the Utes will do their best to stop that.

Urban Meyer is almost certain to replace Willingham.

Isn't it amazing that to some people, this is the most important fact! Women make up over 50% of the population, but how many Division I-A coaches are women?

I am thrilled at the prospect of getting Urban Meyer, though.

People are speculating Urban Meyer from Utah (he has a buyout clause for Notre Dame), but I'm sure the Utes will do their best to stop that.Actually Meyer has an explicit out for three schools that he can designate each season. Right now those three are Notre Dame, Michigan, and Ohio State. So he can go there without any buyout being required.

Or offered Barry Alvarez whatever it took not to leave as DC.

Good grief, is this all they think about?
Sure sounds like it. I'm sure Jesse and Al are already hiring protesters to picket in from the Notre Dame. Then I imagine some hate crimes charges will be brought up.
