The speculation is finally over in Cleveland for Butch Davis.
FOXSports.com has learned that Davis has resigned as head coach and head of football operations for the Browns today, just one week after the team announced he would not be fired this season. The Browns are adamant that they have not fired Davis but this is completely his decision. Nearly two months ago the team decided to at the very least strip the Browns' top dog of his general manager duties the two have since hired a head hunter to help owner Randy Lehrner and President John Collins do preliminary leg work on potential GM replacements.
The decision that Davis would be out as head coach after the year came soon after and nearly came to a head last Sunday night. However, no change was ultimately made until today.
Davis and team brass met late last night and came to the agreement it was time to move on to pursue a college job.

Bless us with an offense and a defense, Lord.
Otherwise we'll look like a Mike Brown team.
Bob Petrino is also an excellent recruiter. Runs a pretty good offense, too.
BTW, why couldn't the Browns get somebody like Belicheck?
Actually, Holmgren was never the GM in Green Bay. He wanted both jobs and that's why he went to Seattle. But I do agree with your point that mixing the two jobs is a recipe for disaster.
i feel for couch...he never had a chance....
the first 2 years he was running for his life...
his 3rd year was better, because the team around him was adequate to beat a high school team. but he got hurt while trying to win the game and his backup got the credit. then he came out and kept winning games, while everyone kept screaming for Holcomb.
Then his 4th year, everyone was screaming holComb and I think Couch hurt his arm during that season...which is why he cant get a job now...
Thankfully for us in Patriots nation Art Moddell decided Belichick didn't have what it takes to be a head coach.
I think it's an ego thing for the head coaches. The real problem isn't evaluating talent but trying to put a team together under the salary cap.
Only the most recent to go... soon to be followed by Erickson, Haslett, and maybe Mike Martz (how he still has a job after blowing the playoff game against Carolina last year is a mystery).
Ahhh, Art Modell, what a fine man, NOT.
Belichick started his head coaching in Cleveland. I am firmly convinced that Belichick NEEDED to be fired. I don't think Belichick would have had the success he has now in Cleveland/Baltimore. Belichick was fired, and that forced him to re-evaluate his approach.
Belichick is the best in the business now, can't argue about that.
BTW, why couldn't the Browns get somebody like Belicheck?
I got so upset when Vermeil left the Rams and all the sports media was giving the credit to their Super Bowl win to Martz. How many Super Bowls has Martz won....oh yeah. A big fat zero!!!!
"Otherwise we'll look like a Mike Brown team."
Uh, hate to break it to you, but right now, the Browns ARE the Bengals. The owner is the rich son of someone who was successful. The son in both cases pretty much appears to be a "placeholder". Neither Mike Brown nor Randy Lehrner appear to be particularly skilled.
The Browns have thrown away many high draft choices. The team consists of a bunch of guys named "Joe" who no one really cares about.
The Browns are the Bengals.
Belichick has said he learned from his time in Cleveland. Still I think he would have won some Super Bowls in Baltimore as well. As good as that Ravens defense was in 2000 can you imagine if Belichick was coaching them? Wow.
The Patriots last two losses in 1994 were to Belichick's Browns.
As a Saints fan, I can almost guarantee that Haslett is gone unless they win out and make the playoffs. They are the most schizophrenic team I've ever seen, one week they're absolutely awful, the next week they play brilliantly.
The sad part is, it's not really all Haslett's fault. After the Mike Ditka debacle, owner Tom Benson hired Haslett and Randy Mueller as GM. Mueller was run out of Seattle to make room for Mike Holmgren, and all he did with the Saints was completely resurrect a dreadful team. So naturally, Benson fired him for some alleged slight and it's been all downhill since.
What's the deal with the Saints getting a new stadium?
Sadly...and I hang my head in shame....I'm a former Cincy resident who lives within striking distance of my home city.
Paul Brown was a great football mind.
Mike proves, however, that professional sports teams should be exempt from inheritance laws.
Course, I'm biased, as I was born and raised in Florida (South Florida) and now live in North Florida. Petrino has been smart to tap the Florida football talent pool, something that smaller schools like Louisville have had a tough time doing in the past.
We'll see what happens. I, personally, am hoping that Petrino is the pick for the Gators.
I just heard (ESPN) that Willingham is out at Notre Dame. Urban Meyer has in his Utah contract that he can leave for ND without penalty. If he goes to ND, that might help open Florida job for Petrino.
IMHO, Bobby Petrino would be a dynamite pick for the Gators. And even though my Tigers would hate to lose Gene Chizic, he too, is ready for a major head coaching job.
Speaking as an Ohioan and a Browns fan (who has a grudging but genuine respect for the Steelers organization) the selection of Ben Rothlesberger didn't exactly hurt. I cringed about that selection on draft day since in my view what you guys mainly needed was a stud quarterback. Your team also seems to understand that a good offensive line is where a successful offense starts. The Browns haven't shown signs of knowing that since the mid 80's.
