The speculation is finally over in Cleveland for Butch Davis.
FOXSports.com has learned that Davis has resigned as head coach and head of football operations for the Browns today, just one week after the team announced he would not be fired this season. The Browns are adamant that they have not fired Davis but this is completely his decision. Nearly two months ago the team decided to at the very least strip the Browns' top dog of his general manager duties the two have since hired a head hunter to help owner Randy Lehrner and President John Collins do preliminary leg work on potential GM replacements.
The decision that Davis would be out as head coach after the year came soon after and nearly came to a head last Sunday night. However, no change was ultimately made until today.
Davis and team brass met late last night and came to the agreement it was time to move on to pursue a college job.

Happy days for the Browns and their fans....
I guess scoring 48 points and still losing was too much for the Browns ownership.
Mike, the Browns had a great air campaign last week. They totaled over 400 yards and something like 48 points.
You win championships with defense.
Not if the score is 0-0.
Davis does has strong recruiting ties to Florida (from his experience with University of Miami) and that can be a powerful influence on who the candidate should be. Though, I personally think Bob Petrino (sp?) of Louisville is the best pick for the Florida job.
Too bad they gave up 58.
You win championships when you've got more on the scoreboard than they do. :>)
(I know what you're saying...)
Bad coaching can make a HUGE difference for any squad. New Offensive and Defensive coordinators for the Steelers have brought tremendous improvement this season.
Nothing personal. But Butch wrestled into a position of complete control of the team. Butch's coaching seemed to be adequate, but his personnel decisions were horrible. From Gerrard (Lunch Money) Warren, to selecting a free agent quarterback who didn't fit your system, (Garcia), to giving up a 2nd round pick to move up ONE spot in the first round to take Winslow. BTW Butch, Detroit would have taken Roy Williams ANYWAY!!!!!!!
Uh, nothing personal, but don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you Butch!
Butch won't be missed in Cleveland.
Don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out, Butch.
Now that's a different story, isn't it?
My point is the Browns scored 48 points and LOST!!!
This is starting to sound repetitive... all of the coaches who also take the GM job seem to have problems with one or the other -- I think you pretty much have to be a full-time coach or a full-time GM, but trying to do both is bad for the team.
i almost broke the satellite remote turning off ESPN when he did that in the draft....thankfully I havent had to watch any of the games being out here....
Adios muchacho, and don't come back.
True. I find it amazing that if Tony Dungy had ANY offense when he was coaching Tampa or any defense with the Colts today he'd have won a Super Bowl by now.
Yeah but at the end of the day they are still Cleveland. One of the few teams that has never been to a Super Bowl. (Sorry I am a Steelers fan that has hated the Browns since birth.) I did like Tim Couch who led the team to the playoffs a few years back. Holcomb got the credit but Couch started most of the games that season.
it worked for Holmgren in Green Bay...
hasnt worked anywhere else though....
Here's looking to the '05 season.
