Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 24, 2004

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

gimcrack \JIM-krak\, noun, adjective:
gimcrackery; noun

1. A trivial mechanism; a device; a toy; a pretty but useless or worthless object; a gewgaw.
2. Tastelessly showy; cheap; gaudy.

The pages in the campaign paper trail released thus far give details on what the Democrats' new category of $250,000 super-donors were explicitly promised for their largess, right down to the "exclusive lapel pin" -- a gimcrack Croix de Guerre from the Democratic National Committee.
--Francis X. Clines, "Donor Is Listed as 'Buddhist Temple' in Democratic Documents," New York Times, December 28, 1996.

Etymology: The origin of gimcrack is uncertain. It is perhaps an alteration of Middle English gibecrake, a slight or flimsy ornament.

I don't know how much his 4x4 is going to help hubby today....traffic in the region today is supposed to be really bad today. We were laughing this morning about why his first call of the day couldn't have been his last call.........it is at the county courthouse, here in our county.

I don't know if he has any calls in maryland, but I know he has at least one in Delaware.

There actually was a time when Blather was actually a credible journalist......of course there was also a time the same thing could be said about Geraldo.

There was a time when we didn't have to lock all our doors when we left the house, too.
There was a time when I didn't feel compelled to carry a firearm with me all the time.

Lots of things have gone down the toilet..."journalism" is but one of them.

Very true-but at least Geraldo has tried (somewhat) to redeem himself, where Rather has begun to believe his own bulls***.

Traffic is going to be terrible where hubby is working, too-mere blocks away from the 4th largest employer in the city-they let everyone off early the day before a holiday, but hubby has no such luck. The whole medical center area where he works is always a total cluster f*** before and during any holiday, too. I suppose I'd better crank up that Blazer and be off-it is going to be hard enough to collect money today as it is-something about holidays that makes customers squeak when they walk...

I find myself wondering how much damage dastardly Dan thinks he can inflict on the President, conservatives and the (already tarnished) reputation of journalism in general before he departs.

I remember when Geraldo was a reporter for ABC in NYC, which was local news for me. He practically single-handedly brought down the NYC mental health department in a superb piece of investigative journalism. Unfortunately that success went to his head. But you are right, he has of late attempted to redeem himself. As to Blather, he hasn't BRGUN to believe his BS - he has believed it for years.

I don't envy anyone that has to do any type of driving today. I have to go to the store, but I'm only on the highway for about 2 miles, the rest is back roads.
