Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 24, 2004

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

gimcrack \JIM-krak\, noun, adjective:
gimcrackery; noun

1. A trivial mechanism; a device; a toy; a pretty but useless or worthless object; a gewgaw.
2. Tastelessly showy; cheap; gaudy.

The pages in the campaign paper trail released thus far give details on what the Democrats' new category of $250,000 super-donors were explicitly promised for their largess, right down to the "exclusive lapel pin" -- a gimcrack Croix de Guerre from the Democratic National Committee.
--Francis X. Clines, "Donor Is Listed as 'Buddhist Temple' in Democratic Documents," New York Times, December 28, 1996.

Etymology: The origin of gimcrack is uncertain. It is perhaps an alteration of Middle English gibecrake, a slight or flimsy ornament.

i am discomfited by having so much left to do with them getting here this afternoon. which means i have to continue to work on stuff while they are here. it is family and won't be a problem, but it isn't the way i prefer to do things.

I totally understand.

Because it is only the 3 of us, there is not much I need to do. Jax and I will make an apple pie tomorrow.

we will not have anyone coming for christmas and that will be similar to what you have. a more leisurely prep. all of my pressure is self inflicted as xshub will gladly tell you. he wonders why i wrap myself around the axle about this stuff, but i just prefer to have things done before anyone gets here so then i can just relax and spend time with them.

Happy Birthday to you, Warrior Nurse.

We just don't seem to have as many opportunities to freep now that the election is over...

Tioga, the day in Jax is hot and overcast, much as it was in September when these pics were taken. We are supposed to cool down tonight (67F) and then stay cool tomorrow...meaning NOT in the eighties.

Okay class, spot Peter Brady!

the xscousins and xskids fave cookies are the peanut butter kiss blossom ones. well i have the dough mixed and when they are all here and settled that will be a project they can do. at least my younger niece who is 14 and xsbrownie are culinarily inclined. xsteen and xscollegeaged niece much less so. so one can do the balls roll them in sugar and other can be peeling the hershey kisses for placement when they come out of the oven.

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Just stopping by - on break from classes (only 3 more weeks 'til the semester's over!)

I'm off to the Turkey Day family round-up.

Safe travel wishes to everyone, and God Bless America.
