Just downloaded Firefox 1.0 and added the Bugmenot extension. Lets you read articles at NYT, LAT, ChicTrib, WashPost etc with out registering! Very Nice! I tried it at all of these sites and it worked like a charm. For those of you who dont know about BugMeNot, its a site that was set up to provide log ins and passwords for sites you have to register for, similar to the HillaryClinton/isaliar logon that was set up by FR users to avoid registration at the NYT. The browser extension links to BugMeNot and automatically fills in a log in and password for you when you right click. I had to try twice at one site, the others logged me right in. If you use Firefox, give it a try! Compatible with versions 8.0 and up.
just scroll down to BugMeNot.
I absolutely love the FireFox browser, way better and safer the IE or Netscape.
Thanks for the info! Perfect...
If you go to sites like Drudge, you can right mouse click on the "banner ad" image at the top (not clicking on it, but just right clicking to bring up a pop-up menu). One of the options is to block images from certain servers. I have blocked a couple of the banner servers. Now, I get no banners when I go to sites like Drudge. You can't block flash ads though.
I use that one too! IE stinks. If people would only try Firefox, no one would use IE again.
I love Firefox but I've had various levels of success with BugMeNot. I drooled over it when I first found it (actually I found the website www.bugmenot.com first and the plugin later). But it's not something I'd recommend highly, though YMMV.
My favorite extension is MouseGestures. Can't live without 'em now.
ttt
Great! Thanks for the info. I just downloaded Firefox yesterday and am very pleased with it.
Bump fer later.
Ive been using the website for some time also, but its a PIA, my trial run to those websites I mentioned, which are the biggest ones, worked well. I cant make mouse gestures work right for me. :(
Actually, www.firefox.com is pretty user-friendly. If you have any questions they don't answer, though, feel free to freepmail me. :)
Thanks Free Republic rules!!!
Nice extensions. I like Firefox but it seams slower than Netscape 7.2, especially when I start loading a webpage and want to switch to another Firefox window while the first one loads. Netscape would allow an instant switch but Firefox lags until the first page loads.
Thanks! . . . I like some of his other extensions, too . . . And especially the fact that he has a little tutorial on how to write your own extensions.
There are extensions that beef-up the ad-blocking included in Firefox. I've got AdBlock. It'll let you block all ads (including flash ads) from a particular server. It takes a while to build up your list of servers to block... but the great thing is that, with AdBlock, ctrl-shift-F overlays all flash ads on a page with a manilla-colored box. It's fantabulous.
bump, to use later
