POW/MIA Flag question
Zac's Mom

Posted on 11/16/2004 5:27:31 AM PST by Zacs Mom

Yesterday I happened to be in a shopping area near White Rock Lake in Dallas and I noticed something a little different on a flag pole outside of a Post Office Branch office. Directly under the US Flag there was a black flag of the same size. Although at the moment I noticed it that was barely a breeze and both flags were moving, I recognized this black flag. At least I thought I did but, since I don't recall having seen one hung at a Post Office before, I wanted to make sure. So I stood and watch the flags gently fluttering for a few moments until a good gust catch them just right and both flags gracefully stretched out to full view. I had to swallow back a lump in my throat as I realized that the black flag fluttering so beautiful beneath the American Flag was, indeed:

a POW/MIA Flag

I honestly do not recall ever having seen a POW/MIA Flag flying at a Federal building before. Is this something that has been done regularly and I simply missed noticing it? It sure made my heart feel good to see it up there!!

On a slightly different note, something else happened yesterday I would like to share ~ this time it happened to my hubby. He stopped off at a local super market yesterday afternoon and happened to be exiting the store the time as a young man (around 22-23 years old). As it turned out their vehicles were parked next to one another and the two ended up chatting together as they walked toward their rides. My hubby said that when they reach their parked vehicles the young man noticed my hubby's Marine sticker on his bumper and the lad asked him if he was a veteran. My hubby replied that was indeed and the young man reached out to shake my husband's hand saying, "I just want to say thank you, sir".

My hubby's eyes sort of teared up a bit as he told me about this encounter last night and he remarked that as he shook this young man's hand he noticed the lads hands were calloused from hard work.

Young, hard-working and respectful ~ t'was a small gesture but t'was one that sure touched the heart of that old Marine (and his wife).

I don't know how prevalent it is, but the POW/MIA flag flies from the post office here in southern Illinois.

Not sure about the Federal buildings but the POW/MIA flag flies alongside Old Glory and the Michigan flag at our state capitol building.
