Derailment Spills 20,000 Gallons of Beer

CHILHOWIE, Va. - Fourteen cars of an 83-car Norfolk Southern train derailed near an industrial park, leaving the area smelling like a brewery Thursday.

About 20,000 gallons of beer leaked from three cars of the Roanoke-bound train, said railway spokesman Robin Chapman.

No one was injured when the cars skipped the tracks about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Chapman said.

Investigating officers said the leak did not contaminate any nearby water sources nor affect any highways.

"Everything was contained away from the creek," said Jack Tolbert Jr. of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

Authorities were investigating the cause of the derailment. All trains scheduled to use the tracks through Chilhowie were held until they were cleared Thursday evening.

After the incident, Senator Ted Kennedy emerged from the cockpit, shaken but unharmed.

20,000 gallons of beer on a train
20,000 gallons of beer
If one of those gallons should leak from the train
19,199 gallons of beer on a train...

Some people have all of the luck. I have two major railroad tracks within a couple of miles from my house and nothing this good ever happens. I wonder if there are cows and horses near the spill; that would be a hoot.

How about , "..........shaken but not stirred".

More appropriate.

Three to three-and-a-half hours, under normal circumstances. As you probably know, it's between Staunton and Richmond.

Yep, let's keep our cool. It's not like we're a bunch of DUers who just heard that a shipment of little umbrellas or fruity malts just derailed.

Maybe it was just Keystone or a near-beer.

I'm an idiot. I looked at the map in a hurry. Charlottesville is between Richmond and Staunton, and I know that very well, because we have relatives in Charlottesville. Been there dozens of time. Arrrggggg.

It'll take me 17 hours or so to do the 1,085 miles from my house to Chilhowie. I have to be in Plantersville, an hour northwest of my house, at 7:30 tomorrow morning. I can't compress the 34 hours of the round trip and the beer time into the 19 hours I have.

YEEEEAAAAAAARRRRGH!
