Why Liberals are now calling themselves "Progessives"

Posted on 11/04/2004 1:52:49 PM PST by DavidThomas

Because "liberal" has become a dirty word in American politics. Thank you, Ronald Reagan.

I think it's because of their choice of soup.

I'd still despise them, but I'd have a lot more respect for them if they'd call themselves what they are. Socialists, Marxists, Communists. Anyone of the three works for me.

Excuse me, but didn't they switch from "progressive" to
"liberal" at mid-century for the same reason? Are they
hoping that everyone who remembers the old name is dead?

They do not grasp that what revolts people is what they
stand for, not what name they give it.

Denial. They know damned well that there is absolutely no progress that comes from their philosophy, so they're just comforting themselves.

And basically, liberal was a replacement for socialist or communist when that term became the perjorative. They can run , but they can't hide.

From The Kerry Spot on National Review Online:

'THE MOST FORMIDABLE CHALLENGE TO AMERICAN LIBERALISM IN OUR TIME' [11/04 02:53 PM]

"This is not the apocalypse. But it is the most formidable challenge to American liberalism in our time." That is the reaction from the editors of the New Republic.

Let me offer two cents: This is the end of American liberalism, as we know it. After every previous defeat, they denied reality and made excuses. Reagan was just a charming actor. The 1994 GOP takeover of Congress was a fluke. Gore was the real winner in 2000, Bush just stole the election. The entire 2002 results were a result of an attack ad on Max Cleland. Voters who keep throwing Democrats out of office are just simple-minded fools, swayed by Karl Rove's Jedi Mind tricks.

When the turnout improves, the Democrats would sweep into office, they kept telling themselves.

Well, turnout did improve to the best level since 1968, and the Republicans won. Not by a landslide, but decisively. The only big races that went right for the Democrats were Ken Salazar and Barack Obama.

All of the biggest guns in the left's arsenal - Hollywood, the trial lawyers, the unions, the New York Times, CBS, newly-minted strident liberal talk radio, bombastic and inaccurate "documentaries," all of the skewed members of the MSM... all of them brought their A-game, threw themselves into this fight... and lost to the blogs, talk radio, alternative media, conservative religious groups, and a well-organized GOP ground game.

It's over. None of the left's old tools works anymore. They have to scrap it and start over, and that's why you see the weeping and the wailing and the hair being pulled out.

Reagan's win in 1980 occurred before I was politically aware. I wonder if this is what it felt like.

Yeah, "Progressive" was what commies called themselves in the 30's so voters wouldn't know they were commies. They even had a Progressive political party. Then the Left hijacked the term "liberal." Ironic that they're going back to "progressive" again, now that the term liberal is becoming identified with leftism.

Progressives? They should call themselves Regressives because they're all still living in the 1960's....

Ask a liberal what they mean by "progressive" you can get some pretty funny looks, few answers.

I asked one what John Kerry stood for:

"The Future!"

"Progressiveness!"

I asked her what she meant and eventually got called a name. Most liberals don't even know what they stand for so big fluffy words like "progressive" sound good to them and big empty politicians like John Kerry appeal to them.

Very sad, really.

One Hooters girl I met said she was voting for Kerry because she liked Edwards. I almost did a "spit take" and this time, I was the one with the funny look and no answer.

Maybe we need a fancy, arrogant name for "Conservative". How about "Visionaries"? Naaa... Too lack luster. Something else.

I'm kind of partial partial to "Winners" myself as the new handle for Conservatives if we must choose another.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Here in Canada, we have the Liberal Party, but it's the "progressives" who cause even more damage. They're even worse than liberals, they're socialist/Marxist. And "progressive" is very misleading. They're for regressive tax and fiscal policies. The only thing progressive about them is their hands in our pockets, and their loony social engineering ideas.

I would like everyone to burn the word Regressive into their minds when they think of the Leftists. Adam and Steve is not progress.

Jungles are now rain forests, swamps now wetlands, liberals are now progressives.
