The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

How can it be Colorado? Uh... how can it *not* be Colorado? Dang'dest weather I've ever seen. It'll snow two feet one day and be 80 degrees the next.

Sorry to hear of your classmate. I gather it was a traffic accident of some sort because of the weather?

Yikes! I get all caught up and read this. So sorry, Jen.

And I'm just watching the story on the plane crash in CO that killed Teddy Ebersol, the teenage son of an NBC Sports exec. :-(

Good grief, Jen, did your classmate die in a traffic accident? Thanksgiving and Christmas are always bad abut that since there are so many people on the roads. Last weekend was bad in lots of places with show and rain, too.

I heard about Dick Ebersol's son on the radio in the car this evening. It brought tears to my eyes thinking about my sweet 14 yr. old at home. He and Susan (St. James) must just be devastated.

Actually he drowned. No word yet on why, only that it wasn't blunt trauma and it doesn't look like he panicked or anything - there were other swimmers and a lifeguard there. (Indoor pool at the rec center).

Apparently he's part of a big Catholic family, which is why I'm wondering if the guy I'm thinking of... well, anyone male who wasn't in class today is a suspect.

Oh, good heavens. Drowned in an indoor pool with a lifeguard and all? Sounds to me like something else was going on there... medically.

Sorry to hear of it.

Yeah, that's what we're thinking. Apparently he was working out with his brother... maybe a stroke... anyway, the whole department is upset. There was a student who died earlier in the semester, but she drank herself to death, and she wasn't one of us, anyway.

It's still all very discouraging...

I didn't have a good day today. Just started off bad, it was rainy and cold and depressing after a pretty nice few days with the family.

Well, Steve is making calls and such apparently about the car, so he hasn't abandoned me totally with it.

It's always tough on everybody, even when the connection is only peripheral. In college there was a drunken guy in my dorm that fell out a fifth floor window and died, and on my ship there was a chief that committed suicide with his service pistol, and a couple other such things.

There's just nothing about any such thing that can be said to take the sting out of it. It doesn't make sense, and it never will.

Mmm, not at all. And at this time of year, I can't help thinking how hard it must be on his family.

Oh well. It's a shame, and that's that.
