The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

My sister is coming home the same weekend and she wants to help with the tree. It's easier on everyone if I just go along. I love the way the tree looks when we get it up, but actually putting the ornaments on is an exercise in... well, imagine nine people all trying to decorate the same section of the tree; nobody wants to get on the ladder to reach the high parts; and of course the squabbles over the fact that we never have enough ornament hangers.

Still, maybe I'd miss it. I would miss the hiking around looking for the right tree.

That's a right purdy tree.

I wish we had room for a bigger tree. But as it is, with the newest configuration, we're putting the TV on a moveable cart that we can roll out of the way when company comes over.

So, arrive home with a box of ornament hangers and a box of fudge. And invite this guy over to do the top.

Thank you. It looks a little cluttered in the picture. The lower parts are sparsely decorated due to the canines and felines in the house. Jack the dog likes to *sample* them. *sigh*

You don't want to know some of the things we've had on the top. The best was the year we had an angel one of the bothers had made in Sunday School. It was primarily a styrofoam cup. And then someone took a bite out of it.

But I'm sure ornament hangers are on the TSA watch list... well, I'm probably checking one bag through anyway.

Only three weeks from tomorrow. Wow!

Evening Corin - I would hazard a tall JD would be order. You ascended and descended the endless staircase numerous times without any mishaps, that alone is worthy of celebration.

We were at Lowes as well. Needed some Tung Oil. But did see some really kewl rope light palm trees, yellow rope lights around the trunk and green lights outline the fronds. Would look good with a Creche or as an Island Christmas theme. Mighty tempting. We still got a couple flamingos.

Evening LF - great looking tree.

We know what you mean bout the canine and feline part and Christmas trees. Our Lab cleaned out the lower third with regularity.

The cats have been pretty good over the years, only one had a proclivity for climbing the trunk of the tree.

Hi there! My daughter has gone out for a while, so I am using her laptop.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I've seen the palm trees. I wants 'em bad. They'd be great for the Luau at the pool.

But what I'd need to go with 'em is a couple of these:

If you cock your head a little to the left, it's pretty straight!

Very pretty tree :~D

You know... my family has a tradition. Every year we go looking for the most... um... well, "tacky" is the way we put it, Christmas house display. We always say we're looking for the "Griswald Award Winner".

I guarantee you, the flamingo of lights would win. Doesn't matter if that's the only thing in the yard.

Though... you know... I could see it sitting out on my balcony, almost...

KEWL. With Flamigoes being 36" I would think you would need the 7' Palm tree to keep in approximate scale. With just the palm trees, two 36" and one 7' might look about right. (LSA agrees with you)

Evening all--

My contribution to the economy on Black Friday: at 5:40 I joined the Huddled Masses outside CompUSA and 20 minutes later exchanged currency for a Motorola USB wireless adapter, in furtherance of the techie project at the New Place. Don't have it hooked up yet, as there are a couple other pieces to gather.

My cousin/roommate is supposed to be out of town. Instead, he's in his room moaning about his sinuses.

Tomorrow's biggest goal: National Treasure.

Cool lights, Jen. I have hosted my immediate family's Christmas for the past four years, and this one makes 5...and my c/r wants to get a big giant real tree to fit under our big giant "cathedral" ceiling. As long as he decorates the upper third, at least...

Close Encounters of the Third Kind on TCM...

Thanks! I like my lights.

Ooh... wireless... I do wish I could justify getting a wireless router.

Hehehe....the first thing my brother said when they arrived yesterday was that they didn't have any wet food for the cat and could he borrow a can. Then he went straight home to feed the cat.
