The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

We're tired. And we have to try and stay up for South Park tonight. Although I guess we could tape it.

Any sign of Greta & Co tonight?

It's an X5. I really haven't used it much at all, but I want to! It occasionally won't shut off until I use the reset, and if I don't notice that it's in that state and expect it to shut off automatically when the power setting says it will...the battery dies. And I did that enough times that the backup battery went dead, apparently. Something along those lines. So if I didn't have it in the cradle over the weekend, it'd go completely dead and I'd lose all my data. Does that make any sense?

I bought a new backup battery and I'm hoping I'm right about the power issue being just that the battery was getting drained due to not powering off right. I dumb about this thing, seriesly!

I'm trying to figure out how to watch South Park with these kids still up.

There's no school tomorrow, so I took the day off. I guess I could distract them with a movie long enough to watch tonight.

Miss Cotton, I'm sure it's not crap, of all the HHD's, you are one that really has a way with words. And HHD's, for whatever reason, are good wordsmiths.

Hey there... yah... royally blows. The audit however, appears to be going well. Keeping fingers crossed, but there's an outside chance that if they like what they get this week, the auditors will just sign off and be done with me.

This would be unbelievably good, but it sounds too good to be true. But here's to hopin' [sip]

no sign of Greta yet, but last night it was late when she came in. she's probly still doing the latest peterson update. :-)

the only actor I recognize in it is Rebecca DeMornay.

The older woman trying to get back to Bountiful is Geraldine Page, a wonderful character actress.

I'll keep my finger crossed too! They'll find everything in order and just go away.

There is always hope, Master Ramius!

BTW... gotta pass on this funny story from last night.

Late last night I get forwarded a message from my guy out in DC. He's got a user that sent him a fairly rude nastygram that I will redact heavily and paste in below:

"I Have just returned to [home state] from an inspection. I'm at home with Comcast cable internet access. I'm running [vpn system name] to gain direct access to [server]. I was trying to copy 800MB of photos from my computer to [server] and it was unbelievably slow! So slow, that it's useless. What is the problem with our network? If I was downloading something over the internet, I could get 10 times the throughput. Can you enlighten me? The only thing [vpn system name] seems to be useful for is Outlook access over the net (which I'm doing right now, but not very quickly). Sorry to sound like an ass, but it's very aggravating."

-- [signed east coast muckitymuck]

I recommended that he reply with "I too, am sorry that you sound like an ass". But he thought better of it.

But YUMPIN YIMINY what does this airhead think trying to upload EIGHT HUNDRED MEGS of photos from home. Sure... your comcast cable is 3Mb downstream... but's it is only 128K (kilobits) upstream, dumbass.

And yet this dumbass makes it all *our* fault. People like this should be forced to only ever use 9600bps modems just to get some perspective on the abuse they are perpetrating on the internet.

Heh...well this isn't a very serious effort since it's a journal parody. Lots of everyday details, mostly, and not very interesting to the outsider. But I'm thinking of it as a good exercise in descriptive writing - I think it'll be helpful in that sense!

I want to work on some more serious writing after November is over, though.

Your Axim is always pulling power, even when the screen is off. That's because it has volatile memory. The memory refresh will pull down the main battery first, then start chewing on the backup battery. The backup battery is a simple watch battery (as you discovered), while the main battery will recharge when in the cradle. If you let the main battery run down, and the backup battery run down, then you lose all your data ... which doesn't matter so much if you have it all backed up on your computer.

I usually keep my Axim on its cradle overnight, which will keep the main batt charged. My Axim has stayed in my purse for up to 5 days with the screen powered off without pulling much from the backup battery.

As for your screen ... have you checked your brightness and power settings? What happens if you press and hold the power button?

LOL! I like that idea, at least as a temporary measure. Kinda the technological equivalent of being made to go stand in the corner for being a bad boy.
