If you compare with 2000, you can see a massive amount of Dem support in the triangle between, roughly, Virginia to Louisiana to Michigan has dried up... there used to be a nearly solid line of Dem support from southwest of Memphis, TN all the way to Erie, PA, and all that's there now are a few isolated dots.

Texas is less blue, as are some other states.
