Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 3, 2004

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

schadenfreude \SHAHD-n-froy-duh\, noun:

1. A malicious satisfaction in the misfortunes of others.

If self-replicating e-commerce baby tycoons get on your nerves, it's schadenfreude time. It's true that the Nasdaq rebounded after its staggering loss Tuesday. Nonetheless, what AP described as "the most volatile day ever for U.S. stocks" left a distinctly bearish aftertaste.
--"Market Motion Sickness." The Industry Standard's Media Grok, April 5, 2000

Etymology: German, from Schaden, damage + Freude, joy. It is often capitalized, as it is in German.

I think you're right - I think we held a special fund raiser afterwards to raise the difference - but I could be wrong.

OH well, I'll ljust have to start clipping more coupons and not returning what money I find in the washing machine!!!!

Nice map, SG!

If you'll notice in So. Cal. between the two blue points is a red spot. That's where I was raised. Republican all the way (except my mother).

The little blue speck in the middle of TN is Nashville. I live in the big red county beneath it.

Speaking of west wings, I am almost looking forward to McLaughlin's show this weekend.

Hi all. I wanted to stay off FR until the concession and not end up to depressed by the naysayers. It's a good day to be an American and a bad day to be a socialist.

What I am shocked about is the talking heads harping on the Repubs that they need to take action to address this divided country. I say no way. We won. The winners have no need to grovel for a voice in setting policy, the losers need to reach across the aisle to become united.

Smoke 'em if ya got 'em!

ODonnell is not surprising given that meltdown he had in public on TV where he was calling someone, i can't recall whom, a LIAR about every 2 seconds. But McLaughlin's prediction surprised me.

O'Donnell. It's pretty bad when you melt down so badly that PJB has to apologise to the audience for the network...lol

That was John O'Neill that O'Donnell went apesh!t on...kept screaming "LIAR" like a banshee, O'Neill barely got 2 words in the whole segment.
Only a couple of weeks earlier, Koppell did almost the same thing to O'Neill on NightLine.

Both of them made total a$$es of themselves, and confirmed that "liberal media bias" is rampant to millions (OK, maybe just a few dozen) of viewers.
