THE Forum
Posted on 10/29/2004 8:25:38 AM PDT by hardhead
It has been months and months (perhaps a year) since I posted a vanity. What are your pet peeve words used on Free Republic? Maybe this can be used as a training session, eh?
TOPICS:
KEYWORDS: hugh; loose; lose; moose; series

Yes, I hate "hugh", "series", and "strategery". Rush gets silly with all this. The language is complicated enough as it is.

People who don't proofread their posts, who don't use the spellcheck, or don't put in paragraphs.(BUT I'll live with it because FR has kept me sane)

Here are some of mine:
"It" "has" "been" "months" "and" "months" ("perhaps" "a" "year") "since" "I" "posted" "a" "vanity". "What" "are" "your" "pet" "peeve" "words" "used" "on" "Free" "Republic" "?" "Maybe" "this" "can" "be" "used" "as" "a" "training" "session" "," "eh?"
Just kidding

"Definately"

You and I both. "POLL" is the most frequently used word on FR.
To: hardhead
Kerry.
I'm looking forward to not seeing that word ever again.

"What does "n/t" mean at the end of some posts commonly seen at DU?"
I believe it generally means "no text" - ie. the subject lilne is the entire post so there's no reason to open the post because there is no more text to read.

I really hate "nuff said!"
To me, it reads like "I really don't have the mastery of the language to elucidate my opinion clearly, and I'm tired of typing, so just take my word for it."

Serveral pet peeve phrases.
"moose bit my sister"
series meaning serious
hugh meaning huge
And isn't reminding someone that vanities are a "waste of bandwidth" a waste of bandwidth?
Personally, I like a break from the unrelenting Bush/Kerry fest that is going on so vanities are okay with me. (as long as its in the title of the thread)

What about the use of slang in all its forms? Muddled language signifies and expresses muddled thinking. Shouldn't we aspire to the language standards of, say, revered Founders like Jefferson? By the way, he would never signify a joke by the use of (/sarcasm on/off), for it is insulting to assume that the readers are so benighted as not to be able to get a joke on their own.
