Hi, I'm an independent and I'm newly zotted.

Posted on 10/21/2004 8:12:29 AM PDT by independent5

Hi, I'm new here. I'm an independent so not all of my views are conservative in nature. Am I welcome to post here? Is this is this the appropriate (general/chat) forum to post this in?

Protagoras,

I have already stated that most of the forums I've posted at are liberal in nature. I've already said that I'm tired of that one-sided exposure in my other posts. It should not come as any surprise that some of the things I say sound liberal one way or another. This is the primary reason I've come here -- to get other opinions. No doubt I will post at a liberal forum in the future and be told that some of "my talking points" are conservative.

How much of what I own belongs to you? Or the "country"?

Should the average citizen be allowed to have nuclear weapons?

The second amendment specifically addresses arms that one can "bear." It's talking about weapons that are useful in personal combat -- the types of things that are available to the regular soldiers in the military. Nukes are too big to use in a civil war, anyway.

No you didn't, you came here to state yours. You haven't shut your mouth long enough to listen or learn. Just spouting liberal talking points. Ya got 'em all in too.

Wanna learn? Stop posting and start reading, no need to tell us what your opinions are, we already know all the liberal talking points.

Your answer to rolling_stone

I have to look at those on an issue by issue basis. Sometimes I think its a political flip-flop, sometimes I think its just being thoughtful.

What about the "flip flopping" within minutes of each other...for example during the debates, what was "thoughtful about that"?

I am curious how did you "find FR" and are you currently a college student?

Quiz:
What was the most potent weapon when the second amendment was written?
Was is included in the ones a person could possess?

Sally'sConcerns,

What if I want to endow educational scholarships or support the Church of my choice or help in humanitarian ways.

Then perhaps you haven't reached the point I'm speaking of yet.

Why do you think some of my income would become less important?

What I mean is -- exactly how your income is put back into the economy isn't as important to you. You may impulse buy more often, you may give more arbitrarly decided sums of money to different charities. I mean, you don't have to be nearly as careful with your money because you have enough for yourself. That's just how things play out with human nature. Everyone's primary concern is themself. Once that has been met, how they use their money is very different. I shouldn't have said your money "isn't important" -- I meant your money isn't as important -to you-. You're already covered.

Another angle to look at this is -- the government could be the most efficient and fair way for you to get money to those who need it.

Who gets to decide which part of my income is less important to me?

Obviously these are difficult questions. But we don't always get what we want from government. I'm not sure how to answer this one. Obviously I want to say that you completely decide where your income goes, but I'm not sure that's practical for society.

Maybe [Kerry] should be forced to donate a couple of his wife's homes for humanitarian reasons. Don't you think he has some income that's less important to him?

Of course I think he has income that's less important to him. In fact he thinks so. And I do think its ridiculous that his wife has so many homes. But please don't take that to mean that I now, me alone, get to decide to take those homes away. Its a difficult question -- I mean, how is it that Kerry's wife has been able to get those homes? In part, its because of society's support. Doesn't that mean she should be giving back to society?

I do think there are reasonable arguments behind this kind of thinking, it is not all completely bogus, though many of the ways it has been implemented are.

Here's the drill. This is not Usenet or an ArtBell chatroom. We do not introduce ourselves. We post a thoughtful reply to an existing thread, and then after doing this a few times someone might ask what rock you crawled out from under. In the meantime make a bio on your home page. Do not ever post a vanity thread unless you just had an earthquake that knocked your dog off his feet or if a giant meteorite just splashed the water out of your pool.

All considered opinions are welcome. A percentage here even intend to vote for Ker. . . [augh!] somebody other than Bush.

My guess is that most of your opinions are liberal.

And that's okay. We disagree.

However, I'm not quite sure you're here to learn, but rather to stir a little controversy. And that's okay, too.

Personally, I think it's a shame liberals get banned rather than allowing them to engage in fair and honest debate. Of course, finding a liberal who will actually be honest and fair is mighty rare!

Most of the ones who wander in just want to do a quick, vulgar hit and move on.

That's how he got booted the last time.

antivenom,

What about the "flip flopping" within minutes of each other...for example during the debates, what was "thoughtful about that"?

Can you give me examples? I can respond on a case by case basis.

I am curious how did you "find FR" and are you currently a college student?

Firstly, my mother started frequently reading this site several years ago, she's a staunch conservative. But I hadn't really ever looked into it myself. She sends me news stories from there from time to time. I decided the other day after talking with some guys I debate with at a liberal forum that I'd actually do something about being sick of hearing the same thing all the time. With the election coming up, I figured I'd come listen to some conservatives -- so I came here, seeing that there were literally tons of members.

No, I'm not currently a college student. I graduated from college last year.

I don't now how to answer that question. What defines ownership? Are you talking material goods or what?
