October Surprise? Unit That Refused Iraq Duty

This is nasty business. My hubby was a Viet Nam Combat Vet and they followed the orders of their commanders without question.

It's a strange breed that is joining the forces today. I guess next, some in the military will try the 'sit down protest.' Pity.

Certain segments of our society hate republicans so bad that they make a political move like this because a republican president sent them to fight and not a democrat.
They should stay the hell out of the military then.
The left and their activism has destroyed every institution in this country and I can not stand the fact they are doing it to the military.

It is a voluntary force so what are they complaining about , because they have to fight. That is what they signed up to do.
God bless the soldiers who serve honorable.

From what I understand, the unit was a reserve unit. The situation is under investigation, but it is a most serious matter. I wonder if Kerry's negativism about Iraq has affected the troops. If these people are convinced that "it's the wrong war, at the wrong time, and in the wrong place," why should they risk their necks? I'm only speculating here, for I have no idea what is behind this unit's refusal to obey orders.

Exactly. God Bless Our Honorable and Dedicated Soldiers.

I agree, but at the root it's selfishness.

It was reported yesterday that 16 or 17 soldiers out of a platoon was ordered to take fuel up north of Baghdad.

The soldiers said the fuel was 'contaminated,' and their equipment was poor and they had no one to protect them. So, they refused to transport the fuel.

I wonder how they knew the fuel was 'contaminated.'

They played back a phone call the one female soldier made to her mom in the states. She told her mom about this, that they had refused to take the fuel, and for her mom to make calls and raise holy hell.

Also, the female soldier told her mom that they were being held prisoner now.

The military said that these soldiers were never held prisoner nor were they detained. The mother called their Congressman, and that's all I know. An investigation is under way.

A few of the soldiers have since been transferred.

These are shirkers, all are probably liberals raised by liberal parents who hate authority and are probably in the military because they "asked not what they can do for their country but rather what their country can do for them."
The bitter fruit of liberalism continues to grow and infect the world.

My son is one of that "strange breed" you refer to. He chose to delay his college education and volunteered for the infantry. Many of the young men he went through boot camp with at Ft. Benning had done the same. They've been to Iraq and are likely headed for Afghanistan next.

If the majority of those enlisting in the military today were indeed a strange breed- we'd never have accomplished what we have in Afghanistan and Iraq.

You're exactly right. And I hope you didn't misunderstand me. This is an isolated incident. 16 soldiers out of thousands we have over there. And God Bless them all!

Did they report that another group of soldiers DID make the delivery?
Can you imagine that a member of the Military alled "mommy" to do something? What shouts out at me is that this young woman was so immature that she didn't know how to go up the chain of command, but called home to ask mommy to do something, after the fact.

Other reports have stated the fuel had been rejected at another airbase.

Ok, thanks. The story is still unfolding. I missed hearing what you just told me.

Actually I thought this was fairly well below the radar. I thought it would have been a bigger splash given it was a topic a couple of times during the debate (properly equiped vehicles and the like).

In a case like this, I could certainly understand soldiers wanting to make sure that whoever was ordering the shipment knew what was going on, but I would think that different airbases might have different requirements for fuel. Perhaps the new destination has better ability to deal with contaminated fuel than the previous one, or perhaps they have an excessive number of latrines that need dealing with.
