From: Tim_Leatherman Subject: RE: Kerry Endorsement Date: Oct 7, 2004 12:08 PM Dear Sir or Madam:

I assure you I have personally read your e-mail. However, due to the volume of messages received, I cannot give a personalized response to each of you.

However, here in a nutshell is a general response:

Because I publicly stated how I am going to cast my vote, almost all of you have threatened a boycott against my company.

So be it.

I took a position, and now I will accept the consequences.

I am still going to do my absolute best to make great tools and hope that you and all Americans, of every political affiliation, will find them of value. If not today, someday.

Tim Leatherman

President

Leatherman Tool Group, Inc.

-----Original Message----- From: Sent: Wednesday, October 06, 2004 9:05 PM To: Mktg-1 Subject: Kerry Endorsement

Due to you recent endorsement of John Kerry, I will never purchase another of you tools. I will ensure that my brothers in arms know of your support of John Kerry.

They have competition. No need to buy a Leatherman. I've actually been looking for a multi-tool, glad I know what NOT to buy.

Linking to a WEBMAIL portal that requires a password is not particularly useful.

Notice that "Almost all of you" have responded negatively.

Gerber makes a great Leatherman-type tool. I have one and love it.

That really is the question, isn't it? Why would you risk alienating half your market?

Was he hoping to increase his customer base? Do hippies use any tool more sophisticated than a bong?

Go Gerber Multiplier or the Victorinox. They rock!

I believe I'm going to buy a competitor's product and mail a proof of purchase to this, uh, leftist tool.

I have a leatherman in my pocket right now, but when the time comes I will now look elsewhere.

Already got rid of mine, sent it back to the company head quarters, after I torched it into pieces.

That was more fun than shredding a Bruce Sprinstinks CD

I have never heard of him, his company or his tools.
Now I will be certain I never purchase anything "Leatherman."

Why would he even make his position public?

I wondered the same thing. If someone wants to vote for Kerry then fine, that's their right. It's when these famous and semi-famous people decide to get vocal about it that I start getting pissed. Just shut up and make your tools - nobody gives a crap about your vote.

The stupidity of these guys amazes me. My father understood that using his farm reader-board sign to endorse a candidate or issue would alienate some of his customer base, regardless of what side of the issue he took. He would only put neutral messages up: "Don't forget to vote", "School board meeting Tuesday", etc.
