The Hobbit Hole XVI - Still round the corner there may wait...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner there may wait...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

From what I understand, no...just a bite that hurts and can cause a local reaction...unless you're allergic, of course. It's murder on insects, though!

Something that big that does no damage and is beneficial ought to be able to live. I wouldn't kill it today...probably keep it a while and then let it go.

Seeing one that big has got to be a once in a lifetime experience...I don't see it ever happening again.

Put your hand up to your computer screen and imagine a spider about that same size...

Glad I'm not seein' anything like that in my garden! We get wolf spiders, but not very big ones.

Takin' a break 'cause my hands were getting numb. It's warming up out there, but still chilly...especially underground. But I have about half of the daffodils and crocuses planted...somewhat halfhazardly, but if they come up, I couldn't care less if they're at ALL evenly spaced. I really hope they work...

The one I was sure on was yesterday. This one is not so sure.

Also need to run out for a big bag o' soil. Which gives me an excuse to go to the hardware store...which means I gotta ignore the other garden stuff I'd like to have!

I'm trying to think of a creative idea for a border for the two new flower beds I'm putting in. Creative = cheap. I've used stones for most of the others, which works OK, but it's hard to weed-whack around. And most of the store bought kind are pretty pricey. Any ideas?

Random is better. I have a "dream" of having thousands of daffodils naturalized in the back yard...

Can you find some salvaged bricks?

SOMEday, I'm going to have the hill by the house cleared and maybe put tiers in...ideally with just HOARDS of daffodils and tulips. Maybe alternating levels.

Hey, it's OK to dream, right?

Hm...that could work. But I dunno where to look. Brick houses aren't exactly common around here, and never have been. But it would look nice!

They come in HOARDS? Cool! They are like colorful little orcs.

I need to redo the border on our driveway (and add some more gravel). We have landscape timbers which I hate. The previous owner did ~not~ do a good job of putting them in....

The person before me used timber for everything...it isn't holding together that well. I'd like to replace EVERYTHING with brick at some point.

And put paving stones or something similar for the front walk. Right now it's gravel, and every winter when I shovel it, I end up with gravel on the lawn on either side. ;-) As soon as the snow melts, I have to pick gravel off the lawn.

We have done timbers, railroad ties, retaining wall stones, old bricks and that plastic stuff. The wood beams are the easiest to install and to weed whack but I like the brick myself. I think when I get a house I will just make the lawn one big garden so I don't have to mow it.
My parents are returning their yard to naturally occurring plants that grow in that area. Prairie grasses and such.

Interesting metaphor to wake up to...

Hope the test goes well - I'll be praying, and you can return the favor next week. Midterms! Argh!

Sounds great to me! I've thought of attempting to get some sort of ground cover plant to take over the lawn...but as it is, I've just been digging it up piecemeal to add more flower and plant beds. ;-) Each year I have less to mow, and therefore hate mowing it even more. This year I generally managed to bribe brothers into doing it, though. Food works well for that...

Heh...my Dad's done that at the house, but not because it's natural. He just doesn't see any point to having a lawn when he doesn't want to deal with it, and when he doesn't HAVE to. Getting crotchety in his old age. Ah well...the house is out in the woods, and there's no one to be offended by it. They have a few flowers and things out front (my littlest sister's) and some things like chives, and the rest is a glorious chaos. Or...it is if you're used to it and think of it as homey.

And with that, I'm off to tackle the future daffodil hoards again...

See ya later!
