The Hobbit Hole XVI - Still round the corner there may wait...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner there may wait...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'm glad it made your assignment that much easier. People like that are treasures!

My bed is calling me, so I'd better go answer. ;-)

Good night everyone! (((Hobbit Hole)))

It's an Indian recipe that is really quite good if you can get past the way it looks.

trini makes a good curry too, but that's to be expected.

My only gripe with curry is that the smell sticks to everything!

Nighty night! (((Ramius))) The week is almost over, thank goodness.

My curry is Thai...

It involves chicken, pork or beef cooked in a coconut milk/curry paste based sauce (add some sriachi!) with assorted veggies. It looks like stir fry in... some disgusting yellow substance. It tastes really, really good. I like it over rice especially.

Tomorrow I'm thinking of trying crock-pot curry.

I think you all remember 2J's recent email fro Renegade Chaplain, where he thanked us for his Hobbit Hole knife. His troops thought it was a great idea, since he chooses to minister to his flock unarmed. (His assistant is pretty well armed, though.)

Well, if a little knife makes his "flock" feel better, a big knife has to be even better. So, with our usual ingenuity, I have developed the "economy sized" Hobbit Hole knife for special members of our armed forces. Here's a photo, with one of our regular knives for comparison.

It's a super-exotic, high-quality knife made by a small company that makes them mainly for Italian Special Forces. It is vey hard to find in this country, and would be hugely expensive, except for my bargain-hunting abilities. The maker is Ultima Ratio ("last resort" in Latin), and should retail for $350.

Because nobody is buying them at that price, a dealer is lquidating his entire stock, and I picked up this high-tech honey for $160. It also comes with a kydex sheath, and enough straps to attach almost anywhere.

The knife is being laser-engraved right now. As a test, I had them put our regular Hobbit-Hole mark on the tang, underneath the rubber handles. "Renegade Chaplain" and the 504th PIR crest will go on the blade.

Engraving is being held up right now because the only example of the crest I have is in color, and I have to reduce it to line art for the laser. While I have Paint Shop Pro, I'm a bit rusty with all the bells and whistles. If anyone can convert this color image to line art, please freepmail me, and I will send you the original.

Of course, if Renegade Chaplain lurks here, our suprise is totally busted. But I felt this had to be risked.

That looks pretty good! One could clean it up a little more and take out the 'noise' so the engraver will just do the nice crisp lines. I ~can~ do this, but I am on a tight schedule this morning and maybe someone else could do it faster than me.

:(

I'm revising a paper. The schmarty-pants who wants the cosmetic changes made is an obnoxious PhD who thinks it's clever to write his comments in Latin. If I roll my eyes any harder they'll pop out.

Good morning!

Another crisp, cool day, though not as cold as yesterday. 34 out there right now...but there really wasn't much frost. It's supposed to get up to 65, though! And 72(!!) tomorrow!

Speaking of tomorrow, turns out I have it off! I knew the students had fall break, but I thought we had to work. Turns out we get a break, too! So...there's my gardening time! Works out perfect. I also have to go out to the house in the afternoon to help my littlest sister make cookies. It's my brother Jim's birthday and she didn't know what else to give him, but I think he'll really appreciate 'em! We're probably going to do pecan chocolate chip. 2J...don't suppose you still have your recipe laying around? Those were soooo good!

g'mornin'...

Slept in the chair last night, so I only woke up ~twice~ with coughing fits. Then there was the time Luke fell out of bed.

At 4:30 a.m. (during fit number 2) I decided swimming this a.m. would be silly, so I reset my alarm. Unfortunately I reset it an hour too late...so Jr. missed the bus and I had to take him to school. He wasn't late, but I was...

In a bizarre way...I really love my life...
