This almost resembles an M1 Carbine being used as a sniper rifle. But I know that can't be. Anyone know what type of rifle this is?

I know, I was just pulling your chain by pulling two "Kerry's" in one thread. No harm intended, just joking around. :) You nailed it with the M14.

Never!!!!!!! (grin)

I remembered the M-14 from my time in submarines (we had a couple on board) and thought thet it looked a little familiar. My Dad was Army (jumped out of perfectly working aircraft!) and thought (but not sure)that it might be the M-21.

BTW, I spend summers in Montana---a VERY selection of weapons to be had thereabouts. Got some deer hunting in and had a lot of fun. I need someone to help me with the kill, but get a lot of leeway from the game wardens

Yes, it's in the Garand family, I vote for an M14 of some type...didn't know they still used 'em...more than .223 for sure.

Does anyone know if an M 14 can shoot as well as a Remington 700?

It's an apples and oranges comparison. Though both are[usually] in the same caliber and most generally using M118 *special ball* match ammo with a 175-grain bullet, the Remington 700 or L96A1 AW [or Savage is used for deliberate, precise fire on a single high-value target, often an individual soldier at a thousand meters or more.

The scoped M14, now known to the USMC as the DMR, is used more the way the Russians use their SVD/Dragonuv: as a rifle for the bst shot in a squad or platoon to reach beyond the range of the unit's assault rifles should a target beyond the range of aimed fire from the unit offer possibilities. That may not necessarily be an individual soldier, but might be several offering multiple targets, a vehicle, or a crew-served weapon...or its crew.

Accordingly, there's a strong feeling in some circles that a two-man sniper team should include one sharpie with a very accurate precision rifle like the Army's M24, the Marine M40A3 or the Navy M86, all based on the Remington M700- or something similar. And his observer/backup should be carrying a scoped semiauto capable of very good if not as outstanding accuracy, also suitable for nighttime work with light amplifying or heat sensitive optics.

And here and there, a third team member is also included, sometimes using a heavy caliber antimaterial rifle or a suppressed weapon, providing flank security for his partners and a nasty surprise for anyone who figures the way to deal with such a team is to maneuver around it and come in on its rear or side. particularly when a bunker position or tower is utilized. Good.

I just read a terrific book called "Cold Zero" by former HRT sniper Chris Whitcomb. (He was at both Ruby Ridge and Waco as a sniper. Highly recommended read.) Anyway, HRT policy was to use a 700 for precision shots from rest positions, and modified M-14s for shots from unstable positions (boats, aircraft, vehicles, trees etc).

No open sights on this .338 win mag semi-auto, It needs a scope.
In lesser calibers you can get open sights.

A great gun for under $1,000.
