Word For The Day, Friday, October 1, 2004
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary | October 1, 2004 | The Verbivores

Posted on 10/01/2004 5:45:27 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

fustigate \FUSS-tuh-gayt\ verb

1. to beat with or as if with a short heavy club
2. to criticize severely *

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
The incumbent senator has been fustigated by his opponent for twice voting to raise taxes.

Did you know?
Though it won't leave a bump on your head, severe criticism can be a blow to your self-esteem. It's no wonder that "fustigate," when it first appeared in the 17th century, originally meant "to cudgel or beat with a short heavy stick," a sense that reflects the word's derivation from the Latin noun "fustis," which means "club" or "staff." The "criticize" sense is more common these days, but the violent use of "fustigate" was a hit with earlier writers like George Huddesford, who in 1801 told of an angry Jove who "cudgell'd all the constellations, ... / Swore he'd eject the man i' the moon ... / And fustigate him round his orbit."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

W said something about not needing to be POPULAR, i can't remember the exact phrasing, but the import was that he wasnt' interested in a GLOBAL POPULARITY CONTEST, which truly is one of the main differences between libs and conservs.

Ti was right earlier. Bush nailed it on substance, but lost it on style. Luckily, his voters are not easily swayed like the kedwards koolaid sippers.

A Pyrrhic debate win for Kerry
Has his backers all dancing and merry
The man from Mass debated smartly
Fustigated Bush tartly
A loser with perfect vocabulary

i agree, i don't think he lost a single voter, but kerry may have persuaded some precarious swing voters inclined to vote for him that there is more substance to the empty suit than originally thought. that is my only concern.

Kerry continues to fustigate our allies in the War on Terror, in a sense providing aid and comfort to our enemies. Finally some consistency, first Kerry fustigated our troops in 1971, and now our allies in 2004. Who will he attack next?

Hi VRWCmember:

I'll give it a shot.

If the MoonBats and Dung Weasels at DU wish to propigate.
It is they that we must quickly fustigate.

For the sake of Humanity
We must stop the Insanity
The fustis is just the tool
To empty that end of the rancid gene pool.

Jack.

Good old James fustigates the idea of a global(read French) summit.

Here's a good part: I can’t take any more talk about bringing allies to the table. Which ones? Brazil? Mynmar? Microfrickin’nesia? Are there some incredibly important and powerful nations out there whose existence has hitherto escaped me? Fermany? Gerance? The Galactic Order of the Belgian Dominion? Did we piss off the Vulcans? Who? If we mean “France and Germany,” then please explain to me why the reluctant participation of these two countries somehow bestows the magic kiss of legitimacy.

Microfrickin'nesia. I love it.

One huge opportunity that W seemed to completely pass rather than slamming kerry: in reponse to kerry's condescending and arrogant remark about correcting the president, Bush should have said something to the effect that if kerry had bothered to take the time to attend 10% of the Senate National Security Committee meetings then he might actually be informed enough to correct anybody on the issues.

yep, i am wondering if he had some conscious coaching to not be negative in that way? there were so many things he could have said to slam kerry.
