Lurch said in in his opening remarks that Saddam was NOT a threat, but little more than 60 minutes later, in his penultimate remarks, he agreed with the president that Saddam WAS a threat. This may set the record for the shortest flip-flop yet!

---"And now we see beheadings. And we got weapons of mass destruction crossing the border every single day, and they're blowing people up. And we don't have enough troops there."---

And in another part he said our troops were overextended, that they were all in the rotation for Iraq. Thewn he said something about spending too much money there, then not enough is being done, and we should send military aid to Africa to help out in Sudan.

Maybe the biggest mistake of the evening was at the end when Lehrer came over and shook hands and talked with Kerry.

Hmmmmmmm I smell something fishy.

BTW, on the Shinseki issue Rumsfeld has previously indicated that when the final decision was made on the Iraq War Plan and the generals involved were asked whether they had any objections to the plan, Shinseki did not express any objections either as to the number of troops involved or as to the way the plan was to be carried out.

Bush was using this in this context ... Bush used it several times to mock Kerry

BUSH: Plus, he says the cornerstone of his plan to succeed in Iraq is to call upon nations to serve. So what's the message going to be: "Please join us in Iraq. We're a grand diversion. Join us for a war that is the wrong war at the wrong place at the wrong time?"

Thanks for the clarification. I knew Kerry used the grand diversion at least onece.

What about this?
Did I hear Kerry right tonight?

Did he say he would dismantle the missile defense system? Or am my mistaken??

He lost a lot of votes right there if that is really what he said.

Here is the whole section from the transcript. It's like chopped liver, hard to see what he is talking about.

Kerry: Now, with respect to Darfur, yes, it is a genocide. And months ago, many of us were pressing for action.

I think the reason that we're not saying send American troops in at this point is severalfold.

Number one, we can do this through the African Union, providing we give them the logistical support. Right now all the president is providing is humanitarian support. We need to do more than that. They've got to have the logistical capacity to go in and stop the killing. And that's going to require more than is on the table today.

I also believe that it is -- one of the reasons we can't do it is we're overextended.

Ask the people in the armed forces today. We've got Guards and Reserves who are doing double duties. We've got a backdoor draft taking place in America today: people with stop-loss programs where they're told you can't get out of the military; nine out of our 10 active duty divisions committed to Iraq one way or the other, either going, coming or preparing.

So this is the way the president has overextended the United States.

That's why, in my plan, I add two active duty divisions to the United States Army, not for Iraq, but for our general demands across the globe.

I also intend to double the number of special forces so that we can do the job we need to do with respect fighting the terrorists around the world. And if we do that, then we have the ability to be able to respond more rapidly.

But I'll tell you this, as president, if it took American forces to some degree to coalesce the African Union, I'd be prepared to do it because we could never allow another Rwanda.

It's the moral responsibility for us and the world.

Another vote loser:

He declared his intention to repeat the failed Clinton policy in North Korea (basically build the bomb for them) with Iran.

Didn't you just want Bush to say:

"Speaking of books, Senator, I'd love a signed copy of your first book, 'The New Soldier.' I couldn't find any copies in the stores, so they must be real popular. I know a publisher who can print out a few thousand copies for you, if you'd be agreeable to that. I know a lot of folks would like to read it."

I loved where he brought up Bush's dad, the Michael Moore-ish blood-for-oil theory and his Vietnam service all in the same rebuttal. Translation: "I'm petty, I'm a leftist whack job or pretending to be one so the whack jobs will vote for me, and I can't stop saying 'Vietnam.'"

There was also the part where he said he learned from Vietnam not to confuse the warriors with the war--this from a guy who accused every single Vietnam vet of horrible war crimes.

I couldn't believe that he would use Senior Bush against his son.

I bet Papa Bush was stinging mad!

Might harm the Powell lovers here (or draw them to Kerry)

Kerry used Secretary Powell against Bush repeatedly or so it seemed.

As the fact checks roll in... I can only say that John Kerry is going to wish he was a poodle. I think he screwed up in the debate because Bush let him take the attack. And when Kerry attacks, and attacks - he tends to lie expecting people to not catch him.

He forgot there's still over 30 days left to the election... *chuckle* Kerry is screwed!

"I think POTUS and his team realize the real outcome of the debate is going to be determined by revealing Kerry's lies."

Hope you're right. But there were probably a lot of people who watched tonight who might not do any follow-up to hear about Kerry's lies. Not everyone's a Freeper! Still lots of couch potatoes out there.

The POTUS & team better be sure of their strategy.

I think it's going to be hard to avoid all the political chatter, unless you go ice fishing.
