Friend of Mark Hacking Describes Mark The Night Before Lori Disappeared

Sep 17, 2004 10:06 am US/Mountain

A new witness says he was with Mark Hacking the Sunday night police say Mark Hacking murdered his wife.

The police weren't interested in this man's story, because he was in jail. But after 2News told police about the witness, they are now arranging to talk to him.

“He was going nuts. He was going absolutely nuts," said “Jim”, a friend of Mark Hacking.

Jim, (not his real name) has been friends with Mark Hacking for five years and he says he was with Mark in the Hacking apartment the night Hacking allegedly murdered his wife, Lori.

“I was actually there the night he supposedly killed his wife. Mark was distraught,” said Jim.

Jim said that Lori had found out about his lies.

“He said ‘she knows. They'll put me in jail. What am I going to do? What am I going to do’,” said Jim.

Jim knew mark had been lying to his family about school for years. He and Mark talked about it.

“I was like, ‘how far are you going to take this, man? You know you're lying’. He just said he was afraid his dad would find out. He couldn't let his dad find out. He was afraid Lori would tell his dad, more than anything,” said Jim.

Two days after Lori Hacking disappeared, Jim went to jail on an unrelated charge. In jail, he followed mark and the story on TV.

“Then as the lies started coming out, I was like, ‘he's lying again’. I could tell by his demeanor,” said Jim.

Jim then tried to call police.

“Because I was in jail, they weren't interested in me,” said Jim.

Mark Hacking managed his apartment. Jim had managed a different apartment complex for the same company, and he even suspected Mark might have put Lori's body in a dumpster.

“When you're a manager, that's what you do. You know where every dumpster is in every complex,” said Jim.

I knew that it was Hacking from the word go. His family and friends were all talking about how super he was, but I wasn't buying it. I knew that he was nothing more than a mattress buying, motel parking lot streaking, cuckoo faking wife killer.

Most afraid his daddy would find out. Sounds like his folks were still supplying him with $ during the marriage and loss of that income was his major fear.

Still makes me shudder to think what would have happened if their move would have gone without Lori finding out about him first. He probably would have had a better shot at getting away with it there, and still wonder if there's some stupid girl in that city that he might have been messin' around with.

Sometimes I've wondered if that might have been his plan--"Oh gee, she ran off with another guy and I haven't seen her since..."

I've understood from other articles that his father might have been paying his way to university--even though he wasn't actually attending. Discovery of his lies might mean an end to the stipends.

Good catch. Still, it's a strange comment if he actually said it.

I don't know how reliable this "Jim" guy is, but sounds credible. Didn't seem to embellish anything.

First time I heard this guy's statement, I wondered if he was at the apt. before ot after Lori was murdered. I thought after, because Mark made the going to jail statement.

Liar Mark, was insinuating he'd go to jail for lying about college and he couldn't have his dad find out (via Lori.) What a childish thought to cross his mind.

I've thought some more on this case and I think Lori went to bed thinking the NC thing would get worked out and all would be fine.

While Lori's asleep, Mark new there was no "computer glitch" at the college in NC, as he'd told her. Therefore, everything wouldn't work out and be fine. So, Mark decided murder to be the best alternative. I don't know how he thought the lies would never come out by murdering her. To say nothing of him thinking he'd get away with the lies and the murder.

When I first read it, I wondered if there might be something else in Mark's past. But it could be that he was talking about the murder.

But it could be that he was talking about the murder.

Mark said this to Jim at the apartment that very night, so if true, then Lori was already dead? What I'm not positive of yet is, was Jim at the apt. before or after Lori was murdered? Jim also talked about dumpsters.

Fraud. Theft. Swindling his father out of money. I knew someone who pressed charges against her granddaughter for stealing her checks.

I'm sure no university will let you show up for the classes and not pay.

Judging from their cars I thought they lived rather well for their means. Money was coming in from somewhere and it wasn't from the chump-change job Mark had.
