The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

If I lived where it gets really cold, like you do, I'd have heated kennels. You know what else my dogs do? They roll in dead things, they eat rotten squirrels, then throw-up everywhere. There's no way they're coming in the house. If they want to eat that crap and roll around in it, fine, but I don't want the by products and smell in my house.

Our humane society IS nuts.

I've never known anyone who adopted a horse. I just can't do it, I don't have the room nor the time

If I had the room to turn one out until I could find an experienced rider that wanted it, I might. To train one though....Nah.

My dogs have a dog door into the laundry room from their yard. When it's really cold they come in and sleep. When it's nice, they sleep out in their igloos. Well, that's the queenslands. The min pin lives in the house and sleeps on the bed :) No children at home though and husband spoils that min pin rotten.

I keep looking at the pictures - friend said today, what on earth do you need another horse for - you have 12 already. Husband just looked at me like I had lost my mind. My answer to both was if God sends me $1600, I'm getting two of them :)

They are nice though, hopefully they will find homes.

I picked it up on a chemistry site. Nasty nasty nasty. I don't know what I would have done without my uncle. I just finished fixing everything now. He did a lot of it (Thank you god) and I finished up with the spyware issues (417 spyware files later) Bad computer. Very very bad. I feel like an idiot, but these things happen I guess. I'm on a school network with a bad firewall. Luckily I'm paranoid about my virus definitions, and I'll be paranoid about other things as well. I'm going to install a firewall later. Right now I have to get back to work. I'm way way way behind. Been working on the damn computer since 11:45 this morning.

I installed Zone Alarm on mine, along with SpyBot and Norton. Knock on wood, so far okay. :) Don't work too hard.

I think your 80 acres of water came downstream to my place already. Couldn't figure out why the electric fence charger was blowing fuses until yesterday afternoon. Part of the fence had been washed away and covered with mud.......

Bought a new fence charger couple months ago. It is much stronger than the last one. : )

Good Morning! I went to bed last night and didn't finish reading about the PMU horses. I, too, look at pics of horses for sale ALL THE TIME. I don't know why I do it, I'm sure not buying another horse right now. Anybody else look at "horse for sale" sites with no intentions of buying?

It's going to get very cold tonight so I'll put all my pets in the barn with a heater. Not worried about the horses, though. They really furred up this year.

I haven't ridden Tuffy in a couple of months because it's been so muddy and rainy. I worked him on the lunge line Saturday and Sunday and he was a nut, running and bucking. I'm going to start riding him at least three days a week from now on, rain or shine, or I'm gonna get hurt. Winnie the Palomino, that I bought for my oldest daughter, hadn't been ridden in a couple of months, either, but she sure didn't act like it. She was exactly the same as the last time my daughter rode her. She'll probably get struck by lightning.

It had been over two weeks since I rode Sarah Lee. I usually ride 3 xs a week too but with work requirements and getting dark early.... Anyway, my lesson was canceled yesterday because we had a wind alert but I rode on my own . I was expecting the worst and got the best. She did fine. Actually, she was acting happy and didn't want to go back in the pasture when it was time to go.

I had that same problem when I wanted to adopt a dog at pet smart. The lady really got snotty and said we want our dogs to be part of a family. She acted like my keeping my dogs outside made me a monster.

So, I got rid of IE and now I have mozilla instead

I use Mozilla at work and Safari at home. They both have similar features and are both much better than Explorer.

Cold down here in south Florida! Mid 40's last night. I was finally able to shut off the AC and open the windows. Woke up a little chilly this morning. I think that it's supposed to be like this all week. Then Saturday I point the Jeep north.

Good morning.

I didn't get to ride yesterday either. Had a Christmas party to go to and stuff to do for work. Been over a week since mine were rode. Probably going to be after Christmas now before I get to ride. I mostly have always taken the month of Dec. off anyway in the past.

We have a cold front coming in today. The weather guys aren't sure when or how cold it is going to be . It's moving slow but dropping down to the valley. They aren't anticipating rain though, which is strange because when the cold air meets our warn we usually get a storm.

Work calling. Yall, all have a good horse day:')

Chicago suburbs, 20s and wind gusts from NW, but no ice yet in animal's water. Things will probably freeze tonight though, going toward teens, burrr. When we have storms and strong winds are one dog will climb in the bath tub and stay in there day and night. Some guard dog ay, well she is only a Lhasa Apso.

Good morning... The horses are munching their breakfast grain... when they're done we'll go turn 'em out.

Cindy I am glad someone got to ride! We need to work ours too, but have been waiting for a warm enough day when it isn't raining. Sometimes a month or two goes by without riding or working them in the winter... And I think Cyn needs some attention and worked. She's getting cheeky on all this extra feed with no work.

Do you think she is putting on weight yet? I know you thought she wasn't a while back.

Yes, I think she is a little. Her hips still stick out more than I like but she has more meat on her hindquarter, I think. The tell the truth, she's a little hidden in her blanket, and it's good to pull blankets and look at them once in awhile during winter to see how their winter feeding is going!

Gotta love those cheaky horses. :-)
Managed to ride on Saturday and it went very well. Starting to get a little of my confidence back. Worked more on canter transitions.

It's actually pretty mild here right now, but it's overcast and dreary. I think that the cloud cover is keeping everything insulated. How far north are you going?
