The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I take Estroven. Get it at Walmart about $15.00 for a months supply. Works great. But you need to take it for about a month for it to really kick in and start working. I call it my Happy Pills:). Stopped all symptoms.

LOL about the egg thing:)

You can bet the first person who ever ate a lobster was REALLY hungry. I mean... it looks like a giant bug.

People come up with some weird ideas ;~D

I guess some of them are good, but I'm not ready to go for pregnant mare urine, yet.

LOL, me either.

You know, I don't have a problem with any animals being used for such stuff if they are treated humanely, and actually, I'd rather those animals being put down at the end of their usefulness, then this adoption stuff. Soooo many times from what I've learned, people who adopt them don't have a clue what they are doing. I just think there is probably other ways to treat menopause then horse urine, so why do this in the first place.

Morning. Well as long as we "need" the stuff, I don't know why they can't just provide bags and buy the stuff from owners of pregnant horses. If the drug researchers could find a way to collect without interfering in the animal's lifestyle, they could even have my horses poop for the right price:').

Good morning,
It appears that the horses in this instant are halter broke, pictures show man holding some of them. I think they must be broke enough for a farrier, he claims that they pick up all four feet. A good amount of them are young mares, 3-4-5yrs old.

. I'm just not willing to try to train a 1500 pound, 10 year old draft horse that doesn't even know how to lead. I hate pain.
LOL. I second that. :-)

These mares are all appaloosas, all registered with the Canadian Appaloosa Association, some double registered with the US ApHA per the email I just got -

They are all registered with the Canadian registry and can also be US registered for about $50. Some are already US registered.

You'd think.... It's a free by-product created by legitimately pregnant mares... without breeding horses for the sake of pee.

They could have mine for even a cheap price. ;~D

I guess it is good that they are attempting to breed for foals that at least have the potential of market value... Not doing well enough, however, if they still face slaughter without rescue groups.

From reading the adoption application - no one without previous horse experience is allowed to adopt. Also requires name and telepone number of your vet and the name and telephone number of another equine specialist as a reference. Then the usual, description of your facilities, your experience and your plans for the horse.

Well I just had the scare of a liftime. This is completely not related to horses, but...

While I was surfing the net, a malicious downloader program got itself on to my computer and then starting downloading virus after virus after virus. I think 10 total in the space of five minutes. Finally I pulled the plug on my LAN connection, and fratically called my computer guru uncle. Boy was this thing a sorry sonofagun to get rid of. I honestly thought that I was going to have to wipe my hard drive. It infected all kinds of programs and I had to get rid of a lot just to figure out what the heck this thing was. Anything non essential got tossed out. And it KILLED my browser So, I got rid of IE and now I have mozilla instead. Whew what a morning.

Yikes. Mine is finally manageable. I picked up 4 virus' somewhere. It was reading my computer. If I typed about dogs, pet pop up. Weight, weight pop ups. I have no idea what was triggering the porn pop ups:') I already had ad aware and was picking up around 500 objects a day. My husband added McFee(?) It stopped it all except the microsoft pop ups. I still don't know how to stop that. Sometimes I get spammed with so many I have to reboot:'(

I looked at the pics, some of them are really nice looking horses, well built and muscular.

I wonder why they are so picky about people who want to adopt. If the horses are going for slaughter anyway, what difference does it make who adopts them? At least they would have a fighting chance at life if adopted by a beginner. No chance at all if they end up at the killers.

That reminds me of the time a year or two ago, my husband and I went to the local humane society for a dog. When we told them that the dog would be a farm dog, we were told we wouldn't be allowed to adopt. They had to be indoor dogs. I'm sorry, I'm not keeping a lab in the house. With 5 kids and a husband, I have a hard enough time keeping this place clean. It's odd that they would rather kill a dog than let them be farm dogs. I have 4 very happy dogs here, well cared for, shots up to date, warm dog houses, etc., but they don't get to come in the house. I guess that makes me an unsuitable dog owner.

The horses are all nice and with good bloodlines.

This organization generally deals with premarin foals and draft cross mares. I think the foals probably have a better chance with someone who knows what they are doing.

I've seen a lot of adoptions that don't end well with the wild horse adoptions here. People get them who have no idea what they are doing and the people and the horses suffer.

FWIW, I think your humane society there is nuts. Maybe I'd let a lab sleep inside :) but they can't be a house dog easily. They have so much energy and their tails destroy everything in range.
