Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

That's what I meant. If animals that were never "pets" to begin with used for research/ TX in a humane and caring way, I'm ok with it but I didn't know how they were treated. Evidently if they are to be slaughtered after they have done their job with only a token gesture for adoption then in my opinion they aren't. I don't know if this is par for the course or if other ranches differentthough.

I got a whole list of ideas. Mostly food, cosmetics and entertainment stuff but I need to keep it small and under 5 pds to get it there by Christmas. I thought I would just make a sample package and send the list to him and let him tell me what his interests and likes/dislikes are. I'm going to send the free republic web site address and my screen name too:')

This rancher has been in the appy biz since 1965, and pmu for about the past 15 years. He lost his contract about 18 months ago and is gradually getting rid of about 400 of his 500 broodmares. A phase down.....
We have been helping for the past few months. We were at a sale that he had at the ranch in June, most of the horses went for meat. It was heartbreaking and were moved to help him.
The Animali Farm has been working with pmu foals for about 6 years. We had not purchased horses from the appy ranch until this year. Primarily we were interested in draft crosses. The situation is just so desperate with the appys that we wanted to help.

Do you know how they collect the urine? Do they catherize them or bag them or what?
They stand tied in a kindof harness with a cup that collects the urine.
Never mind. I read on a site where they are strapped with rubber bags. A horse could get used to that. What did concern me was "small stall" but small is in the eye of the activist so I went on. The thing that troubled me the most was that the poster stated that the horses are denied free access to water to concentrate the hormone. That is unacceptable to me and setting the horses up for infections and health problems.
Makes me sad because there isn't anything I can do to help.
They are breeding these mares at 2yrs of age. That is so wrong. I have emailed just about every horse person I know, this just breaks my heart.
My doctor bought 3 horses and is stabling where I am. He has found a love for horses too. He says he'll get around to riding someday:') If he's there tomorrow I'm going to ask him about this.
How old should the mares be? If they are having to keep mares for years before breeding, probably all the foals sold then, you think?
We don't breed our mares until they are five or six. Oh yes, everything gets sold - generally to the meat market.
HMM. The questions just keep coming. I wonder if the foals allowed to nurse or taken from their momma?

Have you been reading through the posts about the PMU mares? I've looked in adopting one of these mares when a bunch of draft crosses were coming through town. The major problem with these horses is that they have zero training, for the most part. Not even halter broke, since they herd them through chutes to get to the collecting stalls. I'm just not willing to try to train a 1500 pound, 10 year old draft horse that doesn't even know how to lead. I hate pain.
I don't have the room for anymore pasture ornaments.

You're right, it would be hard to deal with one of these horses, unless you had lots of land to just let one run on. $800 is cheap but you can find horses for the price pretty much anywhere with some looking even some with training.
I always wondered how in the heck do researchers come up with using something like horse urine to treat menopause. Who thinks this stuff up?:) I take an over the counter herb for that that has worked perfect for me, cheaper too. There has to be other, easier ways to treat then horse urine.

LOL I have often thought of that myself. What about eating eggs? Who in the world looked at a chicken and said, "I'm gonna eat the next thing that comes out of that bird."
That $800 adoption fee can quickly turn into a $10,000 hospital bill.
What herb are you taking? I'm having some problems and have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. I'm thinking it's pretty likely that I'll end up with a hysterectomy.
