Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
The original post and explanation that I found on www.justappaloosas.com message board.

Hi, my name is Donna Azzato Raspberry
I am working with the Animali Farm www.theanimalifarm.com trying to place mares from a PMU ranch in Canada. At this point we have Appaloosa mares needing to be placed. The rancher had originally given us a deadline of Nov. 25th and Dec.1st to do this but we were lucky enough to be granted an extension until Dec.31st. If we do not place them by then they will be sent to auction and most likely to slaughter. Time is short so if any of you are interested in these mares go to the Animali farm website I listed below and look at their pictures and check out the details. The horses will be transported to the Animali farm in California from Canada and then from there to their new homes.
If you might be interested in adopting PMU mares and foals now or at a later date continue to check in at the Animali farm website there will be more foals and mares available through out the year. Please help me spread the word to anyone you might know who may be interested.
Thank you for your assistance

No, they all need homes. The farm in California is the first stop on the way from Canada to you I think.
I understand that they are used for medications but wouldn't it be better to adopt them to good homes free of charge after a certain period of gestation. It would be good PR and it's not like the company would be losing any money.
I don't know - it looks like this place has been shut down. The studs are also for sale.
Ping to the posts just upthread for some Premarin Mares needing homes, Great potential here for anyone who can take them in!
Maybe they aren't breeding or over bred? A friend sent Becky and I some stuff about these horses last year. I thought they only sold the stallions though.
It's usually the foals available. They keep and re-breed the mares. T^his farm is shutting down.
It appears that the adoption fee is to cover vet checks, and shipping to California.
This is from the site-
We returned home, horseless. It was heartbreaking, because all of the solid colored foals that we saw were being sold to the meat buyer the day we left. The ranchers were willing to let us take our pick of the foals(even solids) and deliver them to California... for a reasonable price. We knew that we could find people to buy these horses in California, but we did not have the money to buy or feed them, and so we went home sorry about the foals we left behind.

ADOPTION FEE FOR MARES COVERS:
COST OF THE MARE
COGGINS & BORDER CROSSING FEES
TRANSPORTATION TO THE ANIMALI FARM
MONTHLY BOARD IS $120.00, ONE WEEK FREE ON ARRIVAL
I thought I read that the females were kept and bred when old enough. Restocking .
Well, the stupid thing is there is synthetic premarin available, and no need to confine mares in stalls for their entire pregnancy to make this drug. I'd never take this drug, even if it means having a few hot flashes.
Some might be. I dunno.
This farm in California states that they are a non-profit organization. It sounds like from reading their site that they are doing some good work but there isn't a lot of explanation there. I think I'll try emailing the woman to see what is going on.
Maybe Becky will remember more about this.
Speaking of adoption, I got my soldiers name and address today. I'm going to go to Walmarts tonight for a care package. I wonder if he will write back:')
They aren't. The mares live stalled and the foals are an unwanted by-product.
Yes, I'll pass on whatever she says if she replies. I explained that there were several of us, with questions regarding the mares, how she got them, why they are being released, etc.
The practice is horrible, I would like to see everyone stop taking Premarin so there is no market for these people.
